Zusammenfassung: | The complex Yugoslav-Albanian relations in the 20th century present many questions. The author attempts to analyze, on the basis of relevant historiographic findings, the main events, processes, and phenomena of these relations. The work offers views and assessments regarding borders, the rights and position of minorities, and bilateral and international relations, studied within the context of the persistent Albanian obsession with Kosovo and Metohija. The concept of territorial and ethnic Albania, better known as »Greater Albania«, has been a constant source of difficulty in the relations between Yugoslavia and Albania in this century. Throughout this period Albania has made continued attempts to open and redefine the Albanian question, seeking the alliance of that superpower which at a given time could best assist the achievement of these objectives. In past times, this choice fell on Austria-Hungary, followed by fascist Italy and nazi Germany, while today Albanian expectations are linked to NATO and the US. |
