Zusammenfassung:It is known that stress threatens optimal human functioning and that the usage of efficient coping strategies may alleviate its negative consequences. In the present paper we studied the possible mediating effect of self-esteem on the relation between various coping strategies and subjective well-being. The study was conducted on a sample of 556 students from seven faculties from the University of Zagreb. The participants were asked to provide self-rating of the current stress level, and to fill out a shortened version of COPE, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Affect Balance Scale, Self-Esteem Scale and Social Desirability Scale. The mediation hypothesis was tested according to the methodology proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986). The results indicate that self-respect could indeed be a mediator in the relationship between various coping strategies and achieving subjective well-being. Furthermore, in the case of avoidant coping the hypothesis of a total mediation could not be rejected.
