Zusammenfassung: | After the European „springtime of peoples”, London acquired the reputation of an international centre for the activities of conspirational groups aiming to launch a pan-European revolution. In June 1850, Giuseppe Mazzini, had formed the Central European Democratic Committee (the London Committee), an association that was gathering together some of the leading republicans, radicals or revolutionaries, that have fled from their countries after the defeat of the 1848−1849 revolutions. The new association was supposed to be composed of independent national committees, working for a united and independent national (republican) stat at home, while co-operating in an international umbrella organisation. In June 1851, the Romanian Dumitru Brătianu had joined the London Committee. The purpose of the Romanians was to take part together with the other nationalities at the European revolution against the authority traditionally exercised by the dynastic governments, especially against the Habsburg and the Tsarist Empires, in favor of a national and institutional self-determination. |
