Zusammenfassung:The paper focuses on how evalution is constructed in a number of BBC news stories, released in 2004 and 2005, and connected to aspects of Romania's integration in the European Union. The analysis builds on a 'combining' approach , which identifies three main functions that realize evaluation in discourse: positioning the speaker/writer towards the topic, establishing a relationship between the speaker/writer and the hearer/reader, and organizing the text. The findings indicate a predominantly negative evalution of Romania’s accession in the BBC news discourse and no significant change in tone between the two moments in time, even though Romania signed the Treaty of Accession in April 2005.
