Zusammenfassung:This article treats the linguistic situation in Sweden, a multicultural society due to immigration, and how the Swedish has responded to this new situation in terms of a public language policy and legislation, including the Swedish Language Act. This new law from July 2009 confirms Swedish as the main language in the country and promotes it’s use in all areas of the society. The article also examines the current situation in relation to the influence of globalization and how to give an appropriate answer to the question of multilinguism in society in general and the omnipresence of the English language in enterprises and in the educational system. An important result of the new law is increases conscience of language issues with the need for a clear and complete Swedish language combined with recognition of the historical minorities as well as the more recently minority languages.
