The writer says that in his early novels he wanted “to explore intellectual ideas and then looked for dramatic ways of doing it.” But in the case of “Atonement” he had no ideas, simply characters. McEwan states that it seemed to him a much more difficult, but also quite liberating way to write a novel. |
