This text is a paraphrased conversation with Ian McEwan, who recalls his entry into profession, preparation for writing „Atonement“ and the way it was coming to exitence. Despite his ranking as one of the most outstanding British novelists of his generation, he has been regarded as a cool and objective writer. The writer says that in his early novels he wanted “to explore intellectual ideas and then looked for dramatic ways of doing it.” But in the case of “Atonement” he had no ideas, simply characters. McEwan states that it seemed to him a much more difficult, but also quite liberating way to write a novel.
