The United States and Iran have not had diplomatic relations for more than three decades. Iran’s ambitions pose a major challenge for U.S. strategic interests in the Gulf region and the Middle East. Successive administrations tended to differently perceive the hierarchy of interests, define different priorities and pursue different strategies. Yet despite the passage of time and changes in U.S. policy towards Iran and its neighbors, it is possible to pinpoint the main issues that are identified with U.S. strategic interests.
