Professor Eqrem Çabej is primarily known as a historian of the Albanian language. However, he has consistently been involved in the process of advancement of literary Albanian and actively participated in all significant activities organized by the Institute of Sciences (1946-1957), as well as later by the University of Tirana and the Academy of Sciences on the literary Albanian, specifically focusing on the development of orthographic norms and literary norms in general. E. Çabej played a crucial role in establishing the Albanian orthographic rules (through various projects in 1948, 1951, 1956, and 1967). During the discussions of the 1967 orthographic project, he engaged in numerous meetings with teachers from different districts of the country, directly becoming familiar and attentively listening to their opinions. Additionally, he made valuable contributions to the preparation and progress of the Albanian Orthography Congress held in 1972, and further throughout 1973, he actively participated in the meetings of the Commission responsible for drafting the “Orthography of the Albanian Language,” fully aware of the significant scientific and national responsibility entrusted to him, in accordance with the Congress Resolution.
