Zusammenfassung:The aim of this article is to present the phenomenon of ritual slaughter of animals in light of legal and ethical considerations. The authors of the study present the biblical origins of sacrificing living creatures and the ritual slaughter of animals in Judaism (shechita) and Islam (zebach). After historical and religious considerations, the authors discuss the ritual slaughter of animals in the light of international law, citing, among others, the regulations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Council Regulation (EC) No. 1099/2009 of 24 September 2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of 4 November 1950 and in the light of Polish law. The authors conclude that ritual slaughter of animals is a controversial topic for consideration, and this issue should be considered in the historical and civilizational context.
