In a historic decision, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) established its first jurisprudence on climate change, recognizing a direct link between its effects and the quality of life, health, and well-being of individuals. The court concluded that Switzerland failed to fulfill its obligations to mitigate global warming and combat its effects, citing “serious gaps” due to the lack of a carbon budget that sets national greenhouse gas emission limits and the failure to achieve the set objectives.
