Zusammenfassung: | The example of Słuck (now Sluck, Belarus), a private town owned by the Radziwiłł family, shows the idiosyncrasies of the course and the manner of perceiving the events surroundingthe adoption of the 3 May Constitution and its subsequent abolition in the various regions ofthe Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In this ‘local’ dimension, the textbook political divisionbetween the supporters of the Constitution and those of the Targowica Confederation wasconsiderably blurred, or even lost its significance. In 1791–1792, as a result of administrativereform, Słuck became the centre of the new Słuczorzecki district; its creation was a factor ingaining the support of the local nobility for the 3 May Constitution at the sejmik held in February1792. The Targowica Confederation did not recognize the creation of the new district, treating allthe reforms of the Four-Year Sejm as illegal, but the abolition of the district itself by the decisionof the General Confederation in Vilnius was a mere formality, given the existence of a localTargowica Confederation in Słuck, whose leadership was made up of officials, commissionersand judges from the Słuczorzecki district. |
