Zusammenfassung: | The text seeks to answer whether a non-imperial gaze is possible and whether it ispossible in cinema. Mościcki considers the matter by referring to the example ofJean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Mieville’s 1976 film Here and Elsewhere, which itselfis a reading of Godard’s abandoned project Jusqu’à la victoire (Until Victory). The filmundertakes the issue of the Palestinian struggle for independence in the context ofthe evolution of Western colonial thought and its connection to the techniques andpractices of the society of the spectacle. The article juxtaposes Godard’s film with theproject of potential history, in which Ariella Aïsha Azoulay creates a postulate forthe unlearning of imperialism. Mościcki argues that Godard and Mieville implementAzoulay’s postulate with the peculiarity of film language, referring to the needto decolonize the dominant mechanisms of perception and reflection in cinema. Thecontroversy the film stirred among critics and cinema historians can also be seenas evidence that the film touches a sensitive spot in the ideological structure ofcontemporary visual culture. |
