Selection Scheme of the Segureña Breed of Sheep

The breeding program of the Segureño breed of sheep is discussed, standing out main difficulties and achievements for the last three years. The program is presented as a model for the genetic improvement of local breeds used in hard areas of Spain. A total of 151 herds and 36000 animals compose the selection nucleus. The response to selection in this base population is affecting directly the animals that belong to the nucleus, and indirectly around 1.3 millions of animal which is about the whole census of the breed. Up present, the selection objectives of growing and prolificacy have been almost completely developed. However, intense difficulties have been faced on selecting for conformation. The score been used, as a unique dependent variable, does not fulfill the normality properties commonly assumed for the analysis. On the whole, about 80% of the program has been developed. El programa de mejoramiento genético de la raza ovina Segureña, presentado como un modelo de mejora genética de una raza local explotada en àreas difíciles de España, es discutido, resaltando las dificultades y logros durante los últimos tres años.. El núcleo de selección està conformado por un total de 151 ganaderías y 36000 animales. La respuesta a la selección en esta población base està afectando directamente a los animales del segmento de influencia e indirectamente a 1,3 millones de cabezas que constituyen el censo total de la raza. Actualmente, los objetivos de selección crecimiento y prolificidad estàn casi completamente desarrollados. Pero la selección por conformación presenta importantes dificultades. La puntuación corporal total usada, como única variable dependiente, no parece cumplir con las propiedades de normalidad normalmente supuestos en el anàlisis. En general, el programa ha sido desarrollado en aproximadamente un 80%.
