Zusammenfassung:BACKGROUND: Mosman Bay Residence is an architectural project of Martyn Hook through his practice Iredale, Pedersen and Hook (IPH). The house develops the Jekyll and Hyde qualities previously embedded in the collection of previous IPH alterations and additions completed from 1999-2009. The result is a place for living with two distinct qualities responding to the programmatic requirements of living, sleeping and bathing in dialogue with the scale of the site. CONTRIBUTION: In reference to The Eames' 'Powers of Ten', the project explored multiple scales of relating to the site fluctuating between distant views and the intimacy of family relationships, a dialogue between the presence of the meandering Swan River and the Perth city skyline contrasted with the tactile engagement with the garden and pool. The upper level appears as a stranded boat, a vessel drifted down the river and washed up on a bed of rock. This work continues Hook's ongoing contribution to making architecture that seeks to embody a unique design response of innovation and delight. SIGNIFICANCE: The project received many accolades: a Commendation at the 2016 WA Architecture Awards by the Australian Institute of Architects, for the Residential Architecture - Houses (New) Award; a finalist in the Sustainability category at the 2016 Timber Design Awards; and nominated as 1 of 33 houses for WAN (World Architecture News) 2016 House of the Year - a significant worldwide award. It was featured in Architecture Australia, ArchDaily and Architecture and Design.
