| Zusammenfassung: | American painter Morris Graves’s (1910-2001) move to Ireland mid-career was a turning point in his art and state of mind. In 1954, rising national acclaim in the United States and interruptions at his home in Washington State drove the immensely private Graves to the country, where he intended to surround himself with the ideal physical environment to make possible his perfect conditions for painting. Over the next decade he took up residence in County Cork, then County Waterford, and finally at Woodtown Manor, a 35-acre country estate outside Dublin. Observations of Ireland’s natural world, culture, and mythos introduced new subject matter in his work as Graves found a counterpoint to life in the United States and indulged his wanderlust in and beyond Ireland. Artmaking, self-reflection, gardening, home renovation, visits from friends, and periods of respite comprised his time. However, in response to financial issues and an emerging restlessness, Graves sold his Irish property in 1964, and within a year he had settled permanently in northern California. His impressions of Ireland and a period of experimentation outside the United States bridge the spiritual seeking of his early career and his eventual retreat into nature and painting at his final West Coast home, "The Lake." |
