A thuggish barfly, Petit Paul, is in lust with Marie who wants nothing to do with him as she is secretly in love with a dock worker, Jean. In typical melodrama fashion, thwarted love drives the narrative as Marie is basically pushed into the arms of Petit Paul and is again exploited ... With such a simplistic plot, "Coeur fidèle" isn't exactly driven by the narrative but is all about filmmaking technique, style and Epstein's experimentation with writing and direction. He wrote the film with his sister, Marie (who also plays the unnamed disabled woman) and, along with three cinematographers, set about making his third film. There is nothing glamorous or overtly stylish about the film, which follows people from the working class who tend to live in cheap and rundown buildings and frequent similarly grim bars and other locales. This may not seem much by today's films with mind blowing visuals and incredible CGI, but Epstein makes remarkable use of close-ups, with shots of Marie's face, eyes and hands telling you so much about her emotional state. Just as Victor Sjöström did in his 1921 horror film "The Phantom Carriage", Epstein makes great use of double exposure and has images floating in front of characters’ eyes to show how their thoughts are on other matters and other people.
