While John Boswell and others tried to open a conversation about desire between Byzantine men decades ago, the field reverted to emphasis on prohibition and an inability to read the evidence of same-sex desire between men in the sources. Between Byzantine Men: Desire, Homosociality, and Brotherhood in the Medieval Empire challenges and transforms this situation by placing at centre stage Byzantine men's desiring relations with one another. This book foregrounds desire between men in and around the imperial court of the 900s. Analysis of Greek sources (many untranslated until now) and of material culture reveals a situation both more liberal than the medieval West and important for its rite of brother-making (adelphopoiesis), which was a precursor to today's same-sex marriage. This book transforms our understanding of Byzantine elite men's culture and is an important addition to the history of sex and desire between men. This book will appeal to scholars and general readers who are interested in Byzantine History, Society, and Culture, the History of Masculinity, and the History of Sexuality"-- | |

This book will appeal to scholars and general readers who are interested in Byzantine History, Society, and Culture, the History of Masculinity, and the History of Sexuality"-- Homosexualität (DE-588)4025798-8 gnd rswk-swf Bruderschaft (DE-588)4130300-3 gnd rswk-swf Byzantinisches Reich (DE-588)4009256-2 gnd rswk-swf Homosexuality / Byzantine Empire / History Gay men / Byzantine Empire / History Brotherhoods / Byzantine Empire / History Masculinity / Byzantine Empire / History Sex / Byzantine Empire / History Byzantine letters / History and criticism Sexualité / Empire byzantin / Histoire Lettres byzantines (Genre littéraire) / Histoire et critique Homosexualité / Empire byzantin / Histoire Homosexuels masculins / Empire byzantin / Histoire Confréries / Empire byzantin / Histoire Masculinité / Empire byzantin / Histoire Brotherhoods Byzantine letters Gay men Homosexuality Masculinity Sex Byzantine Empire Criticism, interpretation, etc History Männlichkeit (DE-2581)TH000006145 gbd Homosexualität (DE-2581)TH000006274 gbd Byzantinische Geschichte (DE-2581)TH000005765 gbd Sexualität (DE-2581)TH000006266 gbd Byzantinisches Reich (DE-588)4009256-2 g Bruderschaft (DE-588)4130300-3 s Homosexualität (DE-588)4025798-8 s DE-604 Äquivalent Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-03-228444-6 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, ebk. 978-1-351-13523-8 Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033887686&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
