adam_text W ben Shakespearean characters kiss, embrace, or shake hands, hat does il mean: Are dramatic characters billowing established rules ol conduct, or breaking them? Are there rules to brcale Staging Vouch in Shakespeare s In gland sets out to answer these and related questions and, in the process, uncovers the social semiotics ol contact in the earl modern theater. Its central are, umem is twolold. hirst, dramatic characters use touch to delme and contest the nature ol their relationships: laking hands means something diilerein than embracing or, indeed, boldine, hands a diilerein wax. Second, the definitions, the social roles ol actions like these, are up lor debate in venues ranging from sermons to the era’s burgeoning literature on conduct. The drama not onlv portravs but participates in these debates. Where characters touch, so do diilerein ideas about contact’s role m a vanetv ol contexts, Irom love and friendship to polities and business deads. Attending to the social roles ol touch—what it signifies as much as how it feels—the book develops an outside-in approach to our understanding ol ear modern sensation: a sociologe, rather than a phenomenologv, of theatrical contact. It will be ol use to editors, performers, and amone interested in Shakespearean approaches to embodiment. Locating interpersonal touch at the center of dialogues on consent, subjection, agence, and sexualite, this smdv oders new perspectives on an essential element ol Renaissance drama.
