Summary The present book discusses John McDowell’s and Barry Stroud’s approaches to two questions: the question of the nature of linguistic meaning and the question of the nature of values. The author of this work juxtaposes these issues, as McDow ell’s and Stroud’s analyses of both questions lead them to the same conclusion: that both linguistic meaning and values are not reducible to any more fundamental phenomena. The first issue considered is McDowell’s and Stroud’s criticism of such concep tions of linguistic meaning that aim at explaining it in non-semantical and non-intentional terms. This criticism is mainly directed towards a project of constructing a full-blooded theory of meaning - a project recommended by Michael Dummett. In the texts “Philosophy as a Diagnosis. Barry Stroud on the Nature of Philosophy and Meaning” and “Two Sorts of Naturalism, Two Sorts of Theory of Meaning. On John McDowell’s Approach to the Question of Meaning” the author of the present work will attempt to show which assumptions concerning both the nature of phi losophy and the nature of reality underlie - according to McDowell and Stroud - the belief that it must be possible to explain linguistic meaning from the outside (i.e., from an external perspective.) They diagnose the problematic situation in a similar way: at the roots of such conceptions lies the demand to give a completely general explanation of a considered domain and acceptance of bald naturalism. The idea of a completely general explanation implies that an explanation of a phenomenon of a certain kind can only be
satisfactory if the phenomenon is explained without an appeal to any phenomena of this kind. Bald naturalism is a view according to which the whole reality can be described and explained in terms of natural sciences. The second issue considered in this book is the subjectivity of values. In the latest text, “Subjectivity of Values?”, the author discusses McDowell’s and Stroud’s approaches to the following question: does anything have any objective value? Both of the above authors criticise the theory that values are subjective, i.e. that nothing has an objective value. According to subjectivism, evaluative attitudes should be explained in terms of our reactions to axiologically neutral states of affairs. Such an approach guarantees that every evaluative attitude can be explained in non-
186 Summary evaluative terms; moreover, it makes the belief that such attitudes can be studied by natural sciences convincing. The author juxtaposes the question of the nature of linguistic meaning and the question of the nature of values because McDowell’s and Stroud’s arguments against the possibility of a full-blooded theory of mean ing and against explanations of values in terms of subjective reactions are in some aspects similar. McDowell’s most important objections to the subjectivity of values and to the idea of a full-blooded theory of meaning are based on Wittgenstein’s rule-following considerations. Stroud argues that both the stance according to which there are no semantical facts and the subjectivist conceptions of values can not be formulated in a consistent way. The second, deeper reason for comparing the approaches to these - apparently unrelated - questions is that both philosophers think that the subjectivist conceptions of values and the project of constructing a full-blooded theory of meaning have some common assumptions. The text “Truth and Modest Theory of Meaning” has a slightly different charac ter. It focuses on the following question: what semantical term should be used in the formulation of a modest theory of meaning? (A modest theory of meaning - in contrast to the full-blooded theory - gives explanations of the meaning of sentences that appeal to semantical terms.) It is standardly assumed that a truth predicate is such a term. McDowell, who accepts the modest approach to the theory of mean ing, also assumes this point of view, and thinks
that the concept of truth should also be explicated in a modest, i.e. minimalist way. The best explication of this concept is given, in his opinion, by some kind of a so-called identity conception of truth, according to which a true thought (a term “thought” is here understood in the Fregean way) is identical with fact. This text criticises this explication of the concept of truth and points out that the more adequate conception - which preserves intuitions underlying the identity conception of truth - is the operational conception of truth. According to this conception, the notion of truth does not play a predicative role, but is an operator. For that reason it is claimed that it is not the concept of truth, but a derivative concept, namely the concept expresses truth in language L, that should play the central role in the modest theory of meaning. The basic connection between this text and the other two texts devoted to the question of meaning consists in a more detailed determination of the essence of the modest approach to the theory of meaning. The quest for hidden assumptions of various philosophical conceptions is one of the most important features of both McDowell’s and Stroud’s approaches to philosophical problems. They claim that the vital task of philosophy is the di agnosis of philosophical problems. According to them, one of the most common philosophical mistakes is the omittance of reflection on the nature of a consid ered question. In this book the author attempts to show that McDowell’s and Stroud’s inquiries into meaning and values are focused not only on
particular solutions, but also on the general character of these questions. Such an approach to philosophical problems is, of course, close to the Wittgensteinian conception of philosophy.
Summaiy 187 This book has been written not only with the intention to present McDowell’s and Stroud’s views on meaning and values. Its aim is also to develop and criti cise some of their arguments. “Truth and Modest Theory of Meaning” is the most critical text of all included. In other texts the author formulates his own critical remarks concerning especially bald naturalism and the idea of a full-blooded theory of meaning.
