Quite naturally, we are not expecting to provide a comprehensive and exhaustive ac count of the subject; our intention is to show the very promising prospects of research for scholars who decide to engage in this field on a systematic basis. Dariusz Dąbrowski presents a study of the Rurikid princely communities, focusing on the Romanovich branch. He observes that according to the Gali- cian-Volhynian Chronicle the Romanovich branch of the Rurikids identified with “the entire native dynasty of Rus’,” but they traced their genealogy only back to St. Vladimir Sviatoslavovich. The chronicler narrows down his sphere of interest, for instance to the descendants of Vladimir Vsevolodovich Monomakh, and looks at “micro-communities” (the brothers Daniel and Vasilko Ro manovich), or applies a geographical criterion, writing of the princes ofVolhynia or Rus’. Marta Font (Pecz), has contributed an essay on Ruthenian-Hungarian relations in the times of Andrew I and Yaroslav the Wise, with reference to the situation in 11 "'-century Poland. She is particularly interested in dynastic pol icy. Ryszard Grzesik (Poznań) has examined the problem of sources which have not come down to the present times, most of them known only from mentions in other documents. He concentrates on a genealogical chronicle compiled in the 1230s for Kinga, daughter of King Bela ГѴ of Hungary and wife of Boleslaus the Chaste, Prince of Poland. Another similar source he considers is a Cron ica Polonorum which showed the part Poland played in the history of Hungary and argued in favour of an alliance between these two countries. Grzesik deduc es that there must have been such a chronicle from the incipit of the Codex Zam- 321 oyski, the earliest surviving manuscript of the Hungarian-Polish Chronicle (.In cipit Cronica Vngarorum imeta et mixta cum cronicis polonorum et uita samti Stephani). He also offers a reconstruction of what the lost Cronica Polonorum might have contained. Adrian Jusupović (Warsaw) addresses issues connected with the use of Cyrillic narrative sources for prosopographical studies of mem bers of the early 13th-century Polish and Ruthenian elites, as evidenced by their participation in the making of international agreements and treaties. He shows the value of letopis chronicles as supplementary materials to Latin sources, for matters such as information on the patronymics for particular members of the Ruthenian nobility, which helps him to draw up or fill in the gaps in a family tree. Jitka Komendová (Olomouc) presents a methodological study in which she compares selected phenomena relating to intercultural communication in Galician-Volhynian Rus’ and Novgorod. She writes that there were differences be tween these two Ruthenian centres in their relations with their western neigh bours, and these differences may be observed in the historiographical sources. One of the aspects of these differences was a language barrier in the case of Novgorod’s relations with vicinal German communities, or the fact that language did not constitute a problem in the relations between Galician-Volhynian Rus’ and neighbouring countries (viz. Poland, Bohemia, and to a certain extent Hun gary as well). Komendová also addresses the interesting questions of the “agents” of intercultural exchange. Mariya Lavrechenko (Moscow) examines the expres sions and formulae which occur in the Kievan Letopis in its accounts of relations between members of the Rurikovich dynasty. She makes a contribution to a long-standing debate on the way records were made of the embassies these princes sent to one another, and she is in favour of the claim that most of these embassies were delivered orally and usually there was no letter to back up the oration. However, the formulae used for their delivery differed from the way they are recorded in the Kievan Letopis, and on this point she agrees with A.A. Zalizn’ak. Lavrechenko also presents an interesting description of how these lin guistic details could have made their way into the letopis, and she embarks on an assessment of their level of accuracy and reliability (viz. how close the mes sage the envoy actually delivered was to what he was instructed to tell the re cipient of his master’s embassy). Alexei Martyniuk (Minsk) conducts research on Ruthenian-German relations, and this time he has been looking at three sourc es which have not been studied yet, although they have been known. They pres ent a record of Roman Danylovich’s sojourn in Austria in 1250-1253 in connec- 322 tion with one of the stages in the rivalry between Hungary and Bohemia over the Babenberg succession. Martyniuk discovered the arms of Roman Danylovich (a golden lion emerging from flames on an azure background) on a 15th-century panneau showing the Babenberg family tree, preserved in a monastery at Klos terneuburg. The motto under the coat of arms reads “Roman kimig von Reiissen.” Roman was the third husband of Gertrude Babenberg, Duchess ofAustria. The second item is a passage mentioning Roman in a 13th-century Weltchronik by Jans de Enikel. The third of Maryniuk’s sources is a manuscript entitled Generatio Leupoldi marchyonis, quifuitfundator Nemburgemis monasterii et Sánete Crucis commissioned by Albert von Waldkirchen at Heiligenkreuz in the early 14th century. This manuscript presents the family tree of the descendants of Mar grave Leopold III, and again Roman is on record there as the husband of Ger trude, Duchess ofAustria (“Romanus rex Ruscie”). Aleksander Paroń (Wroclaw) focuses on relations between Poland, Ruthenia, and the Polovtsians (Cumans). His point of departure is the story of the camel Mieszko I of Poland presented as a gift to the Emperor Otto III during the Quedlinburg Convention of986. The event prompted some modem historians to assume that the early Piast princes must have cultivated far-reaching relations with the Cuman steppe people. Paroń sets out to check these speculations, endorsing only those for which he finds re liable evidence in the sources. Jan Tęgowski (Białystok) reviews opinions on the Hungarian and Ruthenian context of the deposition of Boleslaus the Gener ous (the Bold). He makes a reference to a remark by Tadeusz Grudziński and observes that historians have tended to underrate the importance of information in the Ruthenian sources. Moreover, the account of the events in the Chronicle of Master Vincentius (Wincenty Kadłubek) should not be dismissed out of hand, despite its evident over-rhetorical approach, in the passages which give the rea sons why Boleslaus decided to take repressive measures against the nobility of Lesser Poland who engaged in a long spell of military action in Ruthenia in de fiance of the King. One of the victims of these repressions was Stanislaus, Bish op of Kraków. Tşgowski’s in-depth research leads him to the conclusion that the Lesser Polish rebellion was not against the Piast dynasty as such, but only against Boleslaus. His mother Dobroniega Maria, the queen dowager and widow of Casimir the Restorer, stayed in Kraków, and when the situation in Lesser Poland returned to normal her and Casimir’s second son, Vladislaus Herman, was put on the throne. The new king had no intention of depriving his nephew Mieszko of his hereditary right to the throne, and after the death of his deposed father 323 brought him back to Poland, made him duke of Kraków, and even chose a wife for him. “That’s not what a usurper does,” Tęgowski comments. Myroslav Vo loshchuk (Ivano-Frankivsk) suggests a well-argued solution to a problem that has been puzzling historians for centuries - the family and/or ethnic background of Procopius, Bishop of Kraków. In Dhigosz’s Chronicle and some of the cata logues of the bishops of Kraków Procopius is tagged with the appellative “de Russia.” But in a 1286 document issued by Leszek the Black he is described as Leszek’s “cognatus” (relative, kinsman). Voloshchuk examined and compared various source materials and reached a conclusion that Procopius may have been the son of Rostislav Mikhailovich, a member of the Czemihów (Chemihiv) line of the House of Rurikovich. For a time Rostislav was lord of Galich. He mar ried a daughter of Bela IV, King of Hungary, and spent a considerable part of his life in the Kingdom of Hungary. Miloš Zečević (Bydgoszcz) ventures south of the Kingdom of Hungary under the Árpád dynasty and shows the significance of that region as an area connecting diverse parts of the European continent. He has compiled a collection of records of the bridges and fords mentioned in the medieval Serbian sources. His research shows that there are not many records of this kind, and often they simply name the bridges and fords, or they give in direct information on the fares charged for ferries, which shows the economic value of these places and services. Alongside the essays on history, this volume also contains some highly in teresting archaeological studies. Aneta Gołębiowska-Tobiasz (Pilzno) exam ines the reception of Ruthenian culture by the Polovtsians. Her research shows a correlation between the rise in contacts between Ruthenian communities and the Polovtsians and an influx of artefacts from Rus’ into the steppes, which the Polovtsians adapted for their own use. There was also a concomitant impact on the Polovtsian sculpture. Monika Kamińska, who is a young doctoral student from the Jagiellonian University, addresses a subject which has been tackled but not given a proper conclusion. There are numerous publications on the Ortho dox monasteries of the Duchy of Halicz (Galich) in the Middle Ages, but noone has drawn up a reliable, cross-checked list of them; furthermore, no atten tion has been paid to the defensive features of these monastic sites. Kamińska shows that there was a clear tendency to found monasteries in places with natu ral defensive qualities; in addition special measures of various kinds were taken to provide them with fUrther defensive structures. One of the assets ofKamińska’s contribution is that she draws her conclusions from a compilation of data 324 from written and cartographical sources, information on place-names, and ar chaeological materials, which makes this a fine comparative study. He chapter is rounded off with a catalogue of the Orthodox monasteries in the Duchy and a large collection of illustrations. Svatoslav Ters’kiy (Lviv) focuses on the im pact of communities belonging to the Latinate, Byzantine, and steppe cultures on the growth of trade in Galician-Volhynian Rus’ in the late 13th and early 14th century. He has found that the region was a “western ground base” for Oriental merchants. He observes that in this period there was a dramatic clash of civili sations here, an encounter between “the European and the Asian civilisations.” This territory was a buffer zone between the Golden Horde and the Catholic ter ritory of Western Europe. 325
