Section II addresses the neurobiology of language acquisition during healthy development and in response to challenges presented by congenital and acquired conditions. Section III covers the many facets of our articulate brain, or speech-language pathology, and the capacity for language production-written, spoken, and signed. Questions regarding how the brain comprehends meaning, including emotions at word and discourse levels, are addressed in Section IV. Finally, Section V reaches into broader territory, characterizing and contextualizing the neurobiology of language with respect to more fundamental neuroanatomical mechanisms and general cognitive domains." - Buchumschlag

Greig I. de Zubicaray is Professor and Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Health at Queensland Univer­ sity of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. His research covers brain mechanisms involved in language and memory and their disorders, neuroimaging method­ ologies, the aging brain and cognitive decline, and most recently, the emerging field of imaging genetics. Niels O. Schiller is Professor of Psychoand Neurolinguistics and Academic Director of the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL). His research interests include syntactic, morpho­ logical, and phonological processes in language production and reading aloud, as well as articulatory-motor processes during speech production, language processing in neurologically impaired patients, and forensic phonetics. The Oxford Handbooks series is a major initiative in academic publishing. Each volume offers an authoritative and stateof-the-art survey of current thinking and research in a particular subject area.
