Summary World War I Monuments in South Bohemia Dating back as far as 1915, the members of the Austrian government instigated the construction of monuments as tributes to war heroes and as means to strengthen the fighting spirit among the monarchy’s residents. Their initiative, however, did not bear much fruit. The only remarkable memorial works created during the war years came from the initiative of two large regiments settled in the region, as several sculptors served in these (Jindřichův Hradec, Písek). Initially, only private efforts of the survivors first spread among the inhabitants. The simplest memorials in South Bohemia commemorating the victims of the Great War were in form of engraved memorial plates located mostly on the village chapel or church facades or in their interiors, or in other village or town public buildings. Family memorials usually had form of a simple stone or cast iron cross, used at that time for graves in the cemeteries. The main difference lay in the simple fact that they carried a characteristic commemorative inscription, but the remains of the deceased were not inhumed next to them. Memorials were built close to the roads on the outskirts of the villages, and can be also found as cenotaphs at entrance gates to the individual’s homestead. In those cases, these crosses served as memory reifications of parting with sons, husbands or fathers, perhaps at the exact place of the last embrace or of a last kiss. Shortly after the end of the war, stone steles began to emerge, representing commonly used type of tombstone with various forms of the top
edge ֊ in the form of a straight edge, a segmental and a triangular top or arch. Their appearance, the decorative finish and the typeface of the commemorative inscription with the list of names of the deceased were at the beginning significantly influenced by the late Art Nouveau style, including distinctive laurel wreaths, linden tree leaves, garlands, volutes, circular, elliptical and geometrical motifs. The above mentioned type of monument now bore quite close resemblance to the next type of memorial works, so called steles, resembling a raised sword. The grip with the pommel rested imaginably embedded in the plinth or were in the ground forming the foundation. Horizontal dividing section of the sword, called the guard, was emerging above the terrain. It was from here, a sizable stone stele shaped as a blade, rose against the sky. It is the area of the imaginary blade, or stele, sometimes including the plinth under it, that provided ample space for engravings of the memorial text, the names of the deceased and of the ones that have died as result of their war injuries. Memorials were occasionally complemented with carved stone balls and cannon shells, occasionally cast from bronze. Various items of equipment and armament, most likely a helmet of the defeated army, have often found place on the memorials among German-speaking South Bohemian inhabitants. In frontier areas, where most of the population did neither share the enthusiasm for breakup of the monarchy nor for belonging to the new republic, it would be fruitless to look for attributes of the Czechoslovak State in
works commemorating the Great War. The eagle and the cross pattée remained the characteristic motifs. A significant difference in the decoration of monuments can be seen in Czech speaking regions. In particular, in the first half of the 1920s, municipal shields appeared on the steles, referring to signs used by Czechoslovak Volunteer Corps. At that time, orders for more artistic and financially more demanding monuments began to appear, often involving legionary motifs. The paradoxical situation that the names of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers are being carved in the close vicinity of those, was not at that time looked upon as a problem. A specific group of works has very soon detached itself from the most accessible and thus most widely spread form of monuments. This group was characterized by supreme quality of sculptural elements with significant symbolism. Commissioners from Czech speaking regions have often chosen depiction of the lion as a symbol of the Czech nation and of the young new state, sculptural groups depicting the victorious abasement of the Habsburg Monarchy. Though not in quantity, but in quality of workmanship, in significance and symbolism, the most significant group is represented by figurai monuments. The main pre-requisite for their creation was the fact, that in the post-war years of the young republic, many new sculptors were commissioned by South-Bohemians (mainly by associations and municipalities). These sculptors were mostly the graduates of the Sculpting Academy in Hořice v Podkrkonoší and often also of foreign studios. Among the best ones were
Václav Suchomel (1869-1930), Antonín Bílek (1881-1937), Karel Gabriel (1884-1966), Rudolf Kabeš (1885-1974), Karla Vobišová-Žáková (1887-1961), Otto Birma (1892-1953), Karel Dvořák (1893-1950) and above all Jan Vítězslav Dušek (1891-1966). Some of them have had a firsthand experience with war and have suffered as soldiers at the front. It is one of the main reasons for highly expressive and emotionally strong sculptural depiction portrayed in these monuments. We often find motifs of parting with soldiers, their mutual help in times of danger, welcoming back of the survivors and mourning for the ones that have lost their lives. Among allegorical themes, most common ones were variations of personification of motherland, portrayed in both
male and female form. It is possible to recognize elements of ‘political eroticism* in some cases, portrayed in agonizingly passionate tension between individual figures. Though the fund of several hundred war monuments in South Bohemia is diverse, we discover upon closer inspection that many decorative motifs and shapes are repeated. This reflects the fact that monuments were produced in duplicate productions by particular masonry workshops and when one design was revealed in a bigger village or a town, it soon became a sought after article worthy of being copied. We can therefore often find stonemasonry works in a town square also placed on close-by village commons, only with slight modifications. We can notice the presence of seemingly original figurai monuments of several work versions by the same author which only illustrates what has for centuries been proven - and still is - a well-functioning practice. The execution of these large, and sometimes costly, artworks was complicated by their composition. The creators therefore used traditional modelli, sometimes assisting themselves with modern means of studio photography. There was a great deal of value in the motifs themselves, which could be used for the same purpose in several places. The models have been therefore often used repeatedly. In cases of cast stone memorials, it was first necessary to create a form which, thanks to its durability and the actual process of making it, called for a repetition of the work. However, copies of figurai monuments are not usually found in neighbouring localities, as is the case of
steles and crosses. This undoubtedly artistically and financially most demanding types of monuments had to properly represent the commissioners or associations* visions, as they deserve the credit for their origination and for dignified memory of the lost sons and fathers. It is therefore understandable that the commissioners were not interested and did not want the same monument as their neighbours had. It is not surprising, that the same motif from the hands of the same sculptor can be found in localities several tens or even hundreds of kilometres away. The unanswered question remains, whether the purchasers of the monuments in South Bohemia knew that a similar work had been done by a sculptor some time ago, for example, in East Bohemia. In a wide range of forms and symbols displayed on memorials, it is possible to trace various perceptions of what the monument expresses and what it turns towards. However, research of municipal and associational records clearly shows that the iconographie layout of individual memorial works only occasionally determined the contemporary social atmosphere of a particular place. Historical depiction of the social context of the commencement of the Great War is sometimes testified only by a limited number of “fractions” within the community, the meaning of the sculptural work being influenced by a very close group of people. At the revelation of monuments with prominent motifs of the antiHabsburg struggle or “pagan” explanatory theme, in some cases representatives of the Roman Catholic Church not only participated, but were strictly
required by local residents to get involved. Elsewhere, they were strongly rejected and would have been replaced by secular speakers, although the work itself included obvious Christian symbolism. It was also the setting of the monument in which it was placed that was highly considered apart from its external appearance. This is why these monuments often became the core of the village, a village common or a city park, taking upon themselves the role of symbolic expression of belonging for those who will not return, but still hold a firm place among their compatriots* hearts. The need for consolation in the community, sought in the hope of a common reunion in eternity, can be sensed by the frequent positioning of the monument in a visual perspective to a church or a chapel. An essential counterpart was formed by the greenery surrounding the monument, making the whole composition in many cases a major cultivating element of the public space.
