Studii de lingüistica si poeticâ (Structures, Systems, Transformations. Studies in Linguistics and Poetics), published one year ago, gathered, with two exceptions, only texts written until 1980, the year I left Romania and moved to the USA. In contrast, the present volume displays a profound continuity between these two periods in my life as far as research in pragmatics is concerned. It includes 14 studies written before 1980 and 36 texts written between 1980 and the present. The option for the field of pragmatics, manifest at the beginning of the seventies, remained a constant of the research I have published since 1971 in Romania, after 1980 outside Romania (in France, Italy, USA, Belgium, Germany, or Canada) and, after 1989, again in Romania. I have chosen to gather in the present volume only the pragmatic approaches of a linguistic nature, be it at the level of the methods used, or at the level of the corpus explored. Other pragmatic studies, centered on the analysis of literary texts, will be reunited in separate volumes. As in the case of Structures, Systems, Transformations, here I have brought together texts written for specialists and texts aimed at a larger public, be it the public of Romanian exiles (to whom Limba min{ii noastre “The Language of Our Minds”, or Pâtimirea numelor “The Sufferings of Names” were addressed), the post-1989 public of Romania (for which were written întoarcerea vorbitorilor risipitori “The Return of the Prodigal Speakers”, Alteritatea asumatâ: franco-americanii din Noua Anglie “Assuming Alterity: The Franco- Americans in New England”, Reacfii la câteva texte despre limba românâ ale lui Solomon Marcus “On Two Texts about Romanian Language by Solomon Marcus”, Comentariu la acad. Solomon Marcus, Un semnal de alarma “Remarks on Solomon Marcus’s Article on the Situation of Romanian in the R. of Moldova” and Vorbitorii tree, limba râmâne “Speakers Pass, Language Endures”), or, in one case, the institutional public of the European Union (I am referring to the project offered in Le plurilinguisme est à vivre par le biais d initiatives concrètes). From the 50 texts contained in the volume, 22 are written in Romanian, 21 in French, and seven in English. They were published in Romanian journals such as Studii §i cercetari lingvistice, Revue roumaine de linguistique, Revista de etnografie §i folclor, Secolul 27, or Dilema; in the exile publication Lupta; and in journals from France, Belgium or the USA, such as Langage et Société, Revue belge de Philologie et d Histoire, Romance Philology, or Semiótica. A number of studies appeared in volumes published in France, Germany, USA, and Great Britain, such as Dialectologie et littérature du domaine d oïl occidental (1995), Vitalité des parlers de l Ouest et du Canada francophone (1997), Français du Canada - Français de France (2000), all coordinated by Marie-Rose Simoni-Aurembou; Encyclopedia of Modern French Thought (2004, editor Christopher John Murray); in the volumes published as part of colloquia or congresses in France, Belgium, USA, or Canada (the C.N.R.S. colloquium Linguistique, ethnologie, ethnolinguistique - La pratique de l anthropologie aujourd hui! Several articles were published in volumes/joumal issues honoring Andrei Avram (2000), Sorin Stati (2003) Marius Sala (2007), and Nicolae Felecan (2011) or in volumes dedicated to the memory of E. Vasiliu (2001), Magdalena Vulpe (2005), Mioara Avram (2006), and Ion Coteanu (2014). Three studies were published in a brochure, short volume or CD-Rom format, respectively, by the Centro Intemazionale di Semiotica e di Linguistica/Università di Urbino, The Cultural Foundation “Secolul 21” in Bucharest and the Actes des Congrès des sociétés historiques et scientifiques/Québec collection: L’histoire conversationnelle [II] (1985), Româna globalâ. Româna §i vorbitorii ei în afara României “Global Romanian. Romanian and Its Speakers outside Romania” (2009) and Prénoms en vigueur parmi les Franco-Américains de Woonsocket (2012). I considered it useful to put these materials, in the language in which they were created, at the disposition of those interested. The first section of the volume presents the relation between linguistic pragmatics, contrastive analysis, geolinguistics and ethnolinguistics via theoretical, as well as case studies. The focus on contrastive analysis, in connection with structural linguistics, already existed in the volume Structures, Systems, Transformations. In the present volume, it is to be found not only in the theoretical attempt to lay the grounds for contrastive pragmatics, but also in the section devoted to the analysis of conversation. In both cases, the studies belong to an advanced stage in the Romanian-English Contrastive Analysis Project, which brought together the Bucharest team directed by D. Chiforan, as well as specialists from the research institutes of the Romanian Academy, universities in Romania and the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C. The attempt to develop a typology of informants that could be used in field research by ethnolinguists, folklorists, linguists, or sociologists also belongs to the Bucharest period. In 1977 I distinguished between several types of informants - creators, executants, commentators, and witnesses - and discussed them in connection with the study of actions/interactions (verbal as well as nonverbal) and of other parameters of their personality (such as age, talent, adherence to tradition, memory, repertory etc.) in the context of material/spiritual, rural/urban culture, etc. Translated into French by Frank Alvarez-Pereyre, with whom I had participated in the “Valea Cosàului” research project coordinated by Mihai Pop, and published in France in 1979, the text was rewritten and enriched in 1988 and this is the version I included in the volume. The articles exploring the relations between pragmatics and geolinguistics were written in the post-1980 period at the invitation of the luminous Marie-Rose Simoni- Aurembou, author of the Île-de-France Atlas, whom I met on the occasion of the 12th International Congress of Romance Linguistics and Philology in Bucharest, accompanied in her Perche fieldwork, and saw periodically, in France or Canada, during the conferences and symposia she organized with humor and dedication. The articles center upon the analysis of the pragmatic dimension of Romanian and French linguistic atlases such as Atlasul lingvistic român. Sérié nouâ “The Romanian Linguistic Atlas. New Series” (1956- 1972), Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de l’Île-de-France et de l’Orléanais (Île-de- France, Orléanais, Perche, Touraine) (1973), Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de la Champagne et de la Brie (1966-1969), and Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de la Bretagne Romane, de l’Anjou et du Maine (Atlas linguistique armoricain roman) ( 1975— 752 1983), more precisely, upon the presence of deictics, of speech acts naming and, in general, of reflection on linguistic action, reaction and interaction in the ensemble of the maps. The contact with the ethnobotanical research pursued by R. Portères and Pierre Lieutaghi allowed me to extend the pragmatic study of linguistic atlases to less evident areas, such as, for example, that of plant names. Portères had introduced, via the concept of ethnobotanicité the opposition between using a plant without naming it, naming a plant without using it, and naming accompanied by the use of the plant. Lieutaghi postulated an immemorial, spontaneous dialogue between humans and plants, with repercussions in the pastoral, agricultural and therapeutic domains. By situating plant-naming in the actional context perception—designaîion—use I was able to distinguish between atlas answers of the informants attesting non-perception, mute perception, mute mage, “theoretical” designation (unaccompanied by use) and practical designation (accompanied by use) of a plant X, thus deepening the analysis of dialectologists’ field inquiries. Starting from Lieutaghi, I developed the concept of memory-names, that is, of names that preserve the memory of the initial perception of the plant and of the suggestions for use that accompanied it. The section Speech Acts includes a study of speech act inventories in rural or regional communities, which can help illuminate the degree of pragmatic variation attested in a given language. Speech acts are examined in connection with the general theory of action and with the concepts of sublanguage and language game. Case studies devoted to a number of locutionary acts (with special insistence on opaque reference in Romanian magic discourse) and to illocutionary acts (such as christening, making introductions, or giving a definition) alternate with analyses of the ways in which speech acts are assembled into textual structures (like folk versified letters or incantations, for example). The first two papers of the section Conversation and Its Multiples {Morfología conversa¡iei “The Morphology of Conversation” and Conversaba - un studiu de caz “Conversation - A Case Study) were written in 1978-1980, shortly before I left Romania. In fact, the second study was interrupted by my departure and was never brought to an end. The pragmatic description and notation of conversations that I developed at the time greatly benefited from an extended period of field research in Maramure§ between 1970 and 1980. Concepts such as anchoring a conversation in the ensemble of the community conversations (by citing memorable turns, proverbs or sayings, all present in the memory of the community, even if their originators were known no more), the contrastive examination of conversational strategy (when conversations are mentally connected to both a source and a target language) paved the way toward extending the pragmatic approach to the ensembles of conversations that make up our spoken lives. I thus went from the analysis of conversational submultiples to that of conversational multiples, such as, the sample conversation series (for example, the sum of the conversations taking place in a given space-time), the institutional conversation series (for example, the ensemble of conversations taking place between teachers and students, physicians and patients etc.) and conversational histories (the sum of verbal interactions between parents and children, colleagues or friends etc.). In this case as well, the beginning had been made while I was still in Bucharest, with the article L’histoire conversationnelle [I], published in 1980, representing the separating as well as unifying point between the research periods 1971-1980 and 1980-present. The study of conversational histories brought with it the development of concepts such as initial/medial/final conversational episode, absolute/relative initial or final conversational episode, the syntactic/pragmatic duration of 753 a conversational history, the pragmatic distance between the episodes of a conversational history, the order of the episodes and its manipulation in a conversational history, internal speech, medial internal episode, pragmatic deactivation, among others. The section Pragmatic Hypostases of Romanian is based on the idea that the current description of a language, especially in the case of “medium-sized” languages1 like Romanian, can no longer ignore its global functioning. In the study Global Romanian, I introduced the opposition between the real, potential, and silenced speakers of a language and I discussed 1) the territorial repartition of the different varieties of Romanian spoken outside Romania and their demographic size; 2) the Romanian emigration and migration waves; 3) the ethnonyms and glossonyms referring to Romanians and to their language; 4) the legal status of the Romanian language spoken in various countries; 5) the Romanian linguistic minorities and 6) Romanian taught as a foreign language, circulated via the internet, music, and film. Texts like “The Language of Our Minds” or “The Sufferings of Names” examine the situation of the Romanian language spoken in communities with a different majority language. In contrast, essay-articles like “The Return of the Prodigal Speakers” or “Speakers Pass, Language Endures” examine a number of pragmatic evolutions of the Romanian spoken in Romania from the point of view of a speaker who lives her relation to her native language in a discontinuous way. The section Language and Identity, Invisible Languages is largely based on the examination of a dominated variant of French spoken in Canada and the United States and of the teaching of Romance languages in American universities. In the study Teaching Romance Languages in the U.S.: The Invisible Part, I show the invisibility of Romanian language even in the Romance Studies departments, where one would expect it to be taught at least episodically. In the project entitled Le plurilinguisme est à vivre par le biais d’initiatives concrètes, formulated at the invitation of the Observatoire Européen du Plurilinguisme, I propose that the European Union schools teach two foreign languages: 1) an international or quasi-international language such as English, French, German, Spanish or Italian; and 2) one among the other languages spoken in the European Union. Such a policy would eliminate the invisibility of whole cultures and countries, which are still barely communicating, although they are introduced in a structure that comprises them. A final section regroups review articles dedicated to John Searle, Émile Benveniste, Heimann Hariton Tiktin and to the studies - by Maria Marin, Iulia Màrgârit, Victorela Neagoe and Vasile Pavel - of the Romanian subdialects spoken outside Romania. * The publication of this volume was made possible by the exceptional work of Ms. Alexandra Speranja Ciutacu, with whom it was a pleasure to collaborate again, and by the benevolent support of Acad. D. R. Popescu, general director of the Publishing House of the Romanian Academy. I thank them both in this good moment of spring and harvest. Ms. Mariana Ionica was, as always, irreplaceable in the computer processing of the book, and I am also deeply grateful to her. My good thoughts go out to all who participated in the printing or will participate in the circulation of this book. 1 We measure the “size” of a language by the number of its speakers and the diversification of its discursive registers. 754
