JOHANN HEINRICH BAUMANN PAINTER AND MAN OF LETTERS Johann Heinrich Baumann (1753-1832), painter and man of let ters, was a talented, unique, powerful and independent personality. In over two centuries, he is the only artist given the nickname “painter of the hunt” (Jagd-Mahler) by his contemporaries, and we still know him by this moniker today. Around fifty of Baumann’s paintings are kept in Latvia’s museums and private collections, a tiny proportion of the over 1,700 works once attribut ed to him; the rest have disappeared or were destroyed. Any conclusions drawn by researchers based on Baumann’s surviving works are merely as sumptions, and ones with dubious veracity. Thankfully, his literary oeuvre, mainly written and published in the Latvian language, has fared better. As with his paintings, information about Baumann’s life is incomplete and fragmentary, drawn from various sources. His 79 years were mainly spent in the Baltic. Born in the Duchy of Courland, he witnessed von Biron’s return home, the end of the duchy and the emancipation of the serfs in Courland (now Kurzeme) and Livonia (now Vidzeme). His was the age of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic war in Russia. A time of tremendous change. Intellectualising about human freedom, struggling for human freedom but, sadly, this struggle falling a long way short of true freedom. The culture of the epoch can be summa rised in a simplistic yet apt formulation: from art destined for the palaces of emperors and dukes to art for ordinary, reasonably well-off citizens. Johann Heinrich Baumann was
born into the family of Courland Superintendent Joachim Baumann (1712-1759). Following the early death of their father, there is little information about the lives of Jo hann Heinrich and his brothers and sisters; it is probable that they were supported by friends and relations, mainly families of Courland clergymen. Johann Heinrich studied at Jelgava Gymnasium, then at Erfurt University (1773-1776), graduating with a degree in philology. Whatever plans the young Courlander might have had involving Erfurt were changed by the course of life. A friendship with the painter Jacob Samuel Beck (1715-1778) also put the brush in Baumann’s hand. We know that he learned to paint in Beck’s studio, while we have no details about his academic strivings, i.e. lectures attended and exams passed. In 1776, Baumann returned to Courland already as a painter. Regarding Baumann’s life in the decade after he returned from Erfurt, biographers usually make general mention of the fact that he Hved at various periods in Courland, Livonia and Riga, rented and ran estates, and engaged in writing, while his greatest passions were painting and
hunting. At the turn of the 19th century, he lived and worked in Koknese, and documents testify to a close relationship with fellow art lovers An dreas George von Bayer (1738-1811), chamberlain of Stukmaņi Manor, and the family of Karl Otto von Löwenstem (1755-1833), councillor to the owners of Koknese Manor. In the early 19th century, Baumann and his family moved nearer to Riga, renting and running Bramberģe Manor on the left bank of the Daugava River, where he continued to hunt, paint and write. In the 1820s he moved to Mazjumpravmuiža Manor on the Daugava’s right bank (today within Riga’s city limits), where he died in 1832. Baumann’s literary career began in Koknese at the turn of the 19th century. He wrote in the Latvian language, and his works appeared both in the Latvian press and as separate publications. The subjects he addressed were mainly related to then current issues in Latvian litera ture, with which he was clearly familiar. Baumann’s literary activities mark him out as a philanthropic “friend of the peasants”. He was part of that section of the German Baltic elite, which was favourably dis posed toward the Latvians, making efforts through books to improve the everyday lives of the Latvian peasants and raise their education level, encouraging also the development of the literary Latvian lan guage. Baumann is a good example of the elite taking an interest in the Latvian language and literature, and he demonstrates the maturity of people’s enlightenment writing in the early 19th century. Baumann’s literary output reveals him as a Baltic German intellec
tual, writing in Latvian, who stood in contrast to those of his peers we know of from the pages of Latvian literary history, in that for him cre ative activities were mainly a hobby rather than strivings of an enlight ener. Baumann differed from other contemporaries writing in Latvian due to his vocation as a pastor, a sense of responsibility and a commit ment to his mission. But he also left the impression that he was just toying with the nascent Latvian literature, trying his hand in a range of different fields. We can only imagine what path nascent Latvian literary culture might have taken if there had been more authors like Baumann. Baumann’s writings in the German language are mainly connect ed with hunting. These include his speeches at meetings of the Riga Hunting Society and his book “Hunting Anecdotes” (Baumann, Jo hann Heinrich. Jagd-Anekdoten, die zwar mehrentheils ans lügenhafte gränzen, aber sich doch wirklich zugetragen. Auf Verlangen meiner
hochgeschätzten Rigischen Jagdfreunde erzählt von Joh. Heim. Baumann. Riga und Dorpat bei J. E Meinshausen. 1817). While the book’s title may give the impression that Baumann merely collected hunter’s tales, this would be unfair. True, Baumann’s contemporaries recalled his jolly nature and sense of humour, and his hunting anecdotes include the odd comic story; but they focus more on what is interesting, unanticipated and unusual. Hunting had a special place in Baumann’s life; he admitted to being a keen hunter as early as 16 years of age. Hunters and hunting in Courland during the 18th century were vividly described by Julius Wilhelm Adolf von Eckardt (1836-1908), Baumann’s first biographer. Von Eckardt stressed that Baumann belonged to an ancient Baltic hunting tribe. In the Baltic, or in Courland at least, everyone hunted - high and low, peas ant and noble; they all shared natural delight in forest and hunting. Baltic hunters strove to outdo each other with their knowledge of the forest and its inhabitants; for them, the prime attraction of the hunt was as an ob ject of scholarship and art, with the joy of the kill taking a back seat. Baumann’s art teacher Jacob Samuel Beck was Erfurt’s finest late Baroque painter. Baumann’s own works also bear the characteristic Ba roque tension between sometimes overflowing joie de vivre and aware ness of man’s insignificance. He also remained true to the peculiarity of 18th century German art wherein the artist seemingly retreats behind his work, accepting the stylistic dictates of the time and society and developing his own
personal expressiveness within this framework. As in Beck’s paintings, Baumann’s works also feature repetitions of certain motifs, which is probably related to a tendency to rationalise the painting process by introducing certain principles of economy such as using master drawings, allowing motifs to be copied into new works, and possibly also employing stencils. Contemporaries recalled that Baumann painted, in the style of Jo hann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), a bear hunt with four bears and 22 hounds, as well as a deer hunt with 18 dogs, giving some idea of Bau mann’s ambition, artistic scope and breadth, and it is truly unfortu nate that these works have been lost for all time. Baumann painted in close contact with the reality around him. As a true friend of nature, the strength of his paintings lies in a deep feel ing for nature and a concrete characterisation of the animal, although on occasion he ignores perfectionism in drawing, volume modelling and other professional qualities. 186
Although Baumann’s creative prime coincided with a period of Classicism and Romanticism in art, as well as the interaction of these styles through various modifications, he was little affected by these trends. Rather, Baumann was a sovereign artist who found inspiration in his immediate environment, i.e. in close contact with neighbouring reality. The vital depiction of innate nature in his realistic artistic im ages is a bright, unique phenomenon against the backdrop of the local painting of his time. J. H. Baumann painted animals and sometimes still lifes in pictur esque environments, which were not just neutral backgrounds - they were organic and active components of the painting. Baumann’s surviv ing works and those described in written sources indicate a wide range of genres - animal pictures, still lifes, portraits. Within the boundaries of every genre, Baumann always kept sight of his priorities. It is telling that in his hunting scenes we see dogs chasing and even seizing their prey, but we never see the hunters. An examina tion of 18th and 19th century works, which reveals that individual hunters or groups of them are often depicted in this genre, shows that Baumann’s approach was in stark contrast to the prevailing ten dency. Did he exclude human figures because he did not want to waste time drawing them? Or did he perhaps want to accent the struggle between animals, i.e. that part of the hunting process, which is closer to nature, pushing into the background the inescapable fact that the hunter kills the game? Another small but interesting group of works is
Baumann’s animal portraits, which may have served as models for larger compositions. And these can be further broken down into an intriguing subgroup ֊ pairs of birds, female and male. Capercaillies on heat, hazel grouses, a rooster and a hen, in which the preconceptions of the time dictated that the man was the head of the household and “he” should be unam biguously dominant, strutting forth proudly and boldly. Judgements of Johann Heinrich Baumann’s personality and paint ings have been varied; some have even called into question whether they are art. Thanks to his “decent, loving and always happy heart”, his choice of his own vocation and faithfulness to it for life, and his inde pendent, single-minded nurturing of his own vision, Baumann’s style can seem almost contemporary through the prism of art today. The ancient tension between two extremes - enjoying life while being aware of the insignificance of human existence - is eternal. 187
