ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF SREMSKIKARLOVCI
RESUME
More than a dozen archaeological sites have been recorded so far at the territory of the municipality
of Sremski Karlovci (covering the area of 5054 square kilometers). They were all named after the place of
discovery, mostly the localities of Sremski Karlovci - Rovine, Seliste, Rasa, Cusilovo, Krivac, Lipovac, Karas.
The majority of these sites are concentrated in town centre, such as Gornja crkva, Sonja Marinkovic street,
Vuk Karadzic street, no. 3 Fruskogorska street, Branko Radicevic square, Magistrate atrium and St. Nicolas
Cathedral church. Some archaeologists use the toponim Klisa to describe this area.
Continual settlement in the area of Sremski Karlovci can be followed through time, starting from
early prehistory up to the medieval and modern periods. It was aided by favourable natural conditions and
geographical position, by the right bank of the river Danube, a major natural route that enabled contact with
the cultures of central and southeastern Europe as early as prehistory.
The oldest archaeological finds are related to the early Neolithic period; these were discovered at
the site Seliste, where traces of a pit-house settlement were recorded. A grave discovered in no. 1 Sonja
Marinkovic street belongs to the same period.
The first archaeological excavation in Sremski Karlovci took place in 1927 at Karas-laka staza site. It
was undertaken by one of the first educated archaeologists, Dr. Miodrag Grbic from Karlovci, then a curator
at History and Art museum, as the National Museum was called ad the time. This excavation brought to
surface traces of a settlement with semisubterranean pit dwellings and a variety of polished stone and bone
tools and clay pottery all belonging to the late Neolithic, i.e. the later phase of Vinca culture group (4500 to
3000 BC).
A group of ceramic vessels that were found in no. 3 Fruskogorska street are dated to Copper Age, or
Eneolithic. A great pythos and a bowl containingsix smaller cups with a long band-like handle are associated
to Kostolac culture group, that is to the rituals specific to the Copper Age communities of the Danube basin
and Pannonian plain.

The Krivac site has yielded several chance finds, chronologically belonging to the Copper Age period:
a celt’ (axe), a dagger, an urn and a tortoise-shaped terracotta (2000 to 950 BC).
The presence of Celtic tribes, the representatives of the La Tene culture, is witnessed by a chance
find (at Vezirac locality) of several destroyed burnt graves’ partial contents, which are dated in mid first
century BC.
In the centre of Sremski Karlovci, high above the Magistrate building, on the brow of Old hill (the
so-called ‘Glass hill’) landslips have exposed Roman brick tombs with a gable roof. The objects from the
dilapidated Roman tombs, such as jugs, lanterns, balsamaria and fibulae, are dated to periods from the 1st
to the 4th centuries. Archaeological excavations in the Magistrate atrium have also produced a partially de-
stroyed Roman period tomb with skeletal remains, dated by its grave goods, a bracelet, into the 4th century.
The remains of Roman architecture (probably an estate of a villa rustica type) were discovered in the town
centre as well as in the fields around Karlovci - in the localities Rasa.
The period of the Great Migration of Peoples is represented in this area by the remains of the Gepids
- a chance find of a richly decorated gilt silver fibula from the 6th century, found at the site Rovine.
Historical events of the Middle Ages, such as the time of the long Avaric domination and the life of
Slavic tribes within the second Khaganate (the 8th century) or the spread of Christianity during the 9th cen-
tury interrupted by the invasion of Hungarian tribes at the end of the 9th century, can only be traced by a few
chance grave finds (clay pots), such as the ones from the Cusilovo site, roughly dated into the period from
the 9th to the 10th centuries.
A rescue excavation campaign at the Branko Radicevic square, in front of the Holy Trinity Catholic
church, brought forth the remains of the walls of a three nave basilica of the ‘Byzantium basilica restoration’
type. This type of basilica was built in Srem after the year 1000, following the settlement and Christianization
of Hungarians.
Above the Magistrate building, at the already mentioned ‘Glass hill’, two campaigns of archaeological
excavations confirmed the existence of a medieval castle or a town named Karom. The name was derived
from the nobiliary particle De Karon, of the then lords of the town. From 1465 it belonged to the Morovic
family, who had in their possession the southeastern part of the Srem county during the 14th and 15th cen-
turies. When the Morovic family had died, the town went to the hands of the palatine Stephen Bathory in
1477, by the decree of king Matthias Corvinus. The town was in the possession of the Bathory family until
September 1521 when it was demolished and burnt, just like the other towns in Srem, by the army of the
Turkish sultan Suleiman. It had never been restored, and its remains were recorded by many travellers in the
16th century.
