- Auktion: Sotheby and Co. <London> : 9.5.1960
- It is believed that this collection originated between 1860 and 1865, when the late William Wellington Greener purchased specimens of the current early breech-loading shotguns for the purpose of studying and improving design. His great success in that direction my account for the fact that he became a regular collector of weapons that now serve to show the development of firearms. Some of the arms are those he selected in 1881 to illustrate his best known work "The gun and its development", which ran to nine editions. Many of the pieces he acquired passed to his sons, Harry and Charles Edward, who continued to add to them. When Harry Greener died his brother devoted much time and energy to the collection, of which the first portion is now offered for sale.
