Abstract
Russian Symbolism. Historical and Aesthetic
Aspects
The book Russian Symbolism. Historical and Aesthetic
Aspects deals with one of the most interesting literary, artistic and
thought phenomena of the Russian culture, which marked its
decisive synchronization with western culture. This research became
necessary as among the Russian cultural studies published in the
Romanian language there is no monographic paper dedicated to
this trend, despite the fact that Russian symbolism is the second most
important manifestation of this trend after the French symbolism.
The monographic presentation of such a complex cultural
phenomenon, covering well over four decades, implied the systema-
tization of an amble body of historic, literary and theoretical data.
After and outline of the general cultural background, the author
focuses on three main writers in order to be able to make a
thorough analyses of their work. Andrei Belii, Alexandr Blok,
Viaceslav Ivanov were chosen because they are representative both
for the artistic creation and for the theory of symbolism. Alexandr
Blok, the “wizard of Russian verse” is considered the embodiment
of the poet, Viaceslav Ivanov, rightfully called “Viaceslav the
Magnificent” is recognized as a major theoretician, while the
“strange and gifted” Andrei Belii made notable contributions to

both the theory and the artistic creations of Russian and European
symbolism.
Sketching the theoretical background, the book attempts to
throw light upon and identify the theoretical findings in the artistic
creations. This offers a double dimension to this monographic
research which has six chapters, five dedicated to the historic and
theoretical elements, and an ample sixth chapter, in which the most
representative symbolist creations are analyzed comparatively.
The Russian symbolism is analyzed diachronically, typo-
logically and aesthetically with reference to the literary and
theoretical studies of the three representative authors. The central
concepts of this research are those of symbol and symbolist
creation, which become subject and tool of investigation both in
the context of European culture and in that of the Russian culture.
Chapter One, The Symbol and the symbolist poetic
discourse, undertakes to define the symbol and give the landmarks
of the symbolist discourse. Obsessively, the symbolists create
symbols reminiscent of the primordial, un-altered, un-multiplied
reality.
Chapter Two, Russian symbolism. Historic and aesthetic
coordinates, has two sub-chapters: 2.1. Precursors of Russian
symbolism and 2.2. Symbolism and avant-garde. It analyses not
only the relationship with tradition, aspect which differentiates
Russian symbolism from the European one, but also the link to the
future, the report with the avant-garde and post-modernist
movements. The common element is the awareness that the artistic
language must be redefined and re-dimensioned.
Chapter Three, Russian symbolism in the European
context, points out the specific Russian elements, by frequent
references to the European symbolistic tradition, especially the
French one: the mystical-religious conotations of symbolist texts,

the impact of Soloviov’s thoughts regarding the creators of the era
taken into discussion, the slavofilism. Unlike the French symbolists,
the Russian ones have cultivated the idea that the symbol almost
exclusively comes from the mythological space.
Chapter Four, The theoretical vocation of Russian
symbolism and Chapter Five, The Creation of Russian symbolists,
both theoretical and analytic highlight the contribution of Russian
symbolism to a more complex and more dynamic profile of the
homonymous European trend. Considered by the Russians a
gnosiology element, intermediating between the divine and the
human spheres, the symbol is conceived and cultivated by them as
embodiment of the divine truth and as an intermediary shape
through which reality manifests.
The central chapter of the book, The creation of Russian
symbolists, represents the original contribution to the decoding of
the actual literary creation of the Russian symbolists, constituting
the “horizontal” section of the book. The text is taxonomically
structured, discussing the literary species to emphasize the Russian
symbolists’ capacity of innovation, as they are known to have
created, among other things, the “symphonies”.
Finally, the chapter Russian symbolism and culture adds
the cultural dimension to the historic and aesthetic ones, so that the
book manages to offer a well-rounded image not only of this
literary trend but of the whole Russian cultural life at the end of the
19 century and the beginning of the 20th century, epoch rightfully
called the Russian Renaissance.
The book fills a void of information, being among the few
Romanian books dedicated to a literary trend in the Russian
culture, one of maximum importance in world culture as well,
reason why it deserves our attention.

Le symbolisme russe. Coordonnées historiques
et esthétiques
Le livre Le Symbolisme russe. Coordonnées historiques et
esthétiques s’intéresse à l’un des plus intéressants phénomènes de
la pensée littéraire et artistique de la culture russe, qui a marqué sa
synchronisation décisive avec la culture occidentale. La recherche a
été nécessaire en vue du fait que dans la littérature roumaine il
n’existe aucune monographie consacrée à ce courant, même si le
symbolisme russe est le plus important comme ampleur et comme
valeur après le symbolisme français.
Une présentation monographique d’un mouvement si
complexe, couvrant plus de quatre décennies, implique la systè-
masion d’un volume considérable d’informations historiques- lit-
téraires et théoriques. Après avoir esquissé le cadre général,
l’approche se limite à trois écrivains, pour permettre une analyse
en profondeur de leur création. Le choix des trois auteurs, Andreï
Biély, Alexandre Blok, Viatcheslav Ivanov peut être expliqué par
leur représentativité en ce qui concerne la création symboliste et la
théorie du symbolisme et de la culture. Ainsi, „le sorcier du vers
russe”, Aleksandr Blok, s’est imposé comme le poète par excel-
lence, Viatcheslav Ivanov, non pas par hasard appelé Vyacheslav
le Magnifique”, comme théoricien de marque, et „Fétrange et le

brillante” Andreï Biély a fait des contributions signifiantes à la fois
dans la pensée et dans la création du symbolisme russe et européen.
Après avoir clarifié le cadre théorique, la monographie se
propose d’approfondir et de prouver ce qu’on a constaté au niveau
de conception et de vision dans le plan de la création même. Cet
aspect offre une double dimension à notre travail, qui motive le
contenu de six chapitres, dont cinq axés sur le registre historique et
théorique du courent et un grand chapitre dans lequel, à travers une
approche comparative, on fait l’analyse des plus représentatives
créations littéraires symbolistes.
Le symbolisme russe va être analysé à partir d’une perspec-
tive typologique, diachronique et esthétique, avec des références
aux études théoriques et littéraires des trois auteurs représentatifs.
Les concepts de symbole et de création symboliste, qui deviennent
objet et instrument de l’enquête, sont les concepts centraux de cette
approche. Pour cette raison, deux chapitres sont dédiés à la théorie
du symbole et du symbolisme dans le contexte européen, d’une
part et dans l’espace de la culture russe, de l’autre part.
Chapitre 1, Le symbole et le discours poétique symboliste
vise la définition du symbole et des repères du discours symboliste.
D’une manière obsessive, les symbolistes créent des symboles qui
envoient à la réalité primordiale, non altérée, non multipliée.
Chapitre 2, Le symbolisme russe. Coordonnées historiques
et esthétiques, avec deux sous-chapitres, 2. 1 Les précurseurs du
symbolisme russe et 2. 2. Le symbolisme et l ’avant-garde, analyse
non seulement la relation avec la tradition, une caractéristique qui
distingue le symbolisme russe de celui européen, mais aussi
l’ouverture envers l’avenir, les rapports avec les mouvances
avangardistes et postmodemistes. L’élément commun est la
prise de conscience sur la nécessité de redéfinition et de
redimensionnement du langage artistique.

Résumé
Chapitre 3, Le symbolisme russe dans le contexte européen,
souligne les notes spécifiques aux symbolistes russes par rapport
au symbolisme européen et surtout français: les connotations
mystico-religieuses des textes symbolistes, l’impact de la pensée
de Solovyov sur les créateurs de la période que nous prennons en
compte, le slavophilisme. Contrairement aux symbolistes français,
les symbolistes russes ont cultivé l’idée que le symbole est
circonscrit presque exclusivement à l’espace mythologique.
Chapitres 4 et 5 La vocation théorique du symbolisme
russe et La création des symbolistes russes, à la fois théorisants et
analytiques, soulignent la contribution du symbolisme russe à
l’élaboration d’une physionomie plus complexe et dynamique des
mouvements universels homonymes. Considéré un phénomène
onto-gnoséologique, intermédiaire entre la sphère humaine et celle
divine, le symbole est conçu et cultivé par les symbolistes russes
en tant que l’incarnation de la vérité divine, mais aussi comme une
forme intermédiaire à travers laquelle coule la réalité.
Chapitre central du livre, La création des symbolistes
russes, représente la contribution originale à l’interprétation de la
création littéraire des symbolistes russes, constituant la section
„horizontale” du travail. Le texte est conçu dans un régime taxo-
nomique, en fonction des genres littéraires, afin de mettre en
évidence la capacité d’innovation des symbolistes russes, étant
donné qu’ils sont, entre autres, les créateurs des symphonies.
Enfin, dans le chapitre Le symbolisme russe et la culture, à
la dimension esthétique et historique du symbolisme s’ajoute une
dimension culturelle, de sorte que, à la fin, le travail offre une
image ronde non seulement de ce courent, mais aussi de la vie
culturelle de la Russie de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe
siècle, une période appelée, à juste titre, la Renaissance russe.

Le livre comble un vide d’information, étant l’un de peu
travaux roumains dédiés à un courent artistique et de pensée russe,
de première importance dans la culture universale, un phénomène
qui mérite l’attention de la culture roumaine.
