Zusammenfassung: | The approach of "space syntax" - a well-established tool for spatial analysis and planning practice - assumes in its theories and methods that spatial arrangements defined by architecture should be considered as products of public activity. The built environment is thus meant to condition and to articulate socio-economic relations. It is this claim of the metatheoretical approach at issue that makes it draw on architecture, sociology and anthropology in order to account for the structures of spatial arrangements. Accordingly, it offers a bundle of analytic models of their spatial order and describes them as articulations of socio-economic relations. Although the foundations of this approach were developed at University College London in the 1970s, and discussed in »The social logic of space« published 1984 by Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson its critical reception since then has limited itself to aspects of its applicability. The present study in contrast focuses on the theoretical basics of "space syntax". It examines its analytical methods together with its underlying conception of interdependencies between spatial order and social dynamics. It results in a survey of "space syntax" identifying and discussing limitations and possibilities of a social logic of space from an epistemological point of view. In "space syntax" the spatial conception and understanding of society are at least partially intrinsic to its methods of spatial analysis. Hence, their sociological and ...
