Summary................................................... Summary Julia Safronova Catherine Yourievsky. — EUSP Press, 2017. — 404 pp, ill. ISBN 978-5-94380-237-9 This book is the first historical biography of Catherine Yourievsky (also known as Dolgorukov), morganatic wife of Tsar Alexander II. One of the main purposes of the book is to dispel a variety of myths pertaining to “the emperor’s affair,” most of which were created by memoirists and writers. The author purposefully draws our attention to the crucial episodes of the romance (the meeting of the emperor with the girl at her parent’s estate, the ball at Smolny institute, “the oath” on 1 of July 1866, and so on) in order to display who created these events and why. The book consists of four parts: “Family,” “The Emperor’s Affair,” “Stepmother,” “The Emperor’s Widow.” Given that each part has a distinct set of sources, the parts differ drastically from each other. The first part is devoted to the Dolgorukov family, who, along with hundreds other noble families, experienced the Great Reforms as a period of “depletion.” It begins with an evaluation of M. Paleologue and V. Laferte’s claim that Catherine Dolgorukov’s noble rank was much higher than Alexander Romanov’s. Two centuries of twists and turns of fate, leading the Dolgorukov “Teplov dynasty” to the edge of financial disaster, provide the reader with an indication of the family’s reputation in society. The central piece of this part is the fight of Princess Vera, Catherine s mother, to keep the estate and to get her children properly settled. The main aim of this chapter is to show that Katya’s story is not unique, and her life is presented in this chapter alongside those of other families over the course of the nineteenth century. The sources of information for this chapter are the letters of several generations of the Dolgorukov family to the representatives of the bureaucratic elite, as well as the correspondence of the officials discussing the Dolgorukov family’s situation. This part gives the readers an idea of the general atmosphere of the Princess’s childhood. The second part is devoted entirely to the relationship between Catherine Dolgorukov and Emperor Alexander II, and it is based almost exclusively on their correspondence. Although the first chapter of this part starts with a description of their meeting in Smolny Institute, after that the author avoids a chronological retelling of events. The life of the couple is shown through the cyclical change of seasons: winter in St. Petersburg, spring in Ems, summer in suburban residences, fall in Livadia, and winter again... This narrative choice was influenced by the particularity of the correspondence. At times, Alexander and Catherine would write exactly the same words about the same events with 402 10 years difference. This repetition of phrases was perceived by the couple as a sign of the consistency of their love, not as a sorrowful sinking into the routine of family life. The couple’s epistolary legacy is examined to reveal the features and characteristics of the language of family correspondence, as well ideas about emotions, family life, sexuality, child rearing, etc. The author returns to a chronological narrative in the third part of the book, where she focuses on a short period of the couple’s life between the marriage and the regicide. The consummation of the marriage on 6 of July 1880 marked the end of the correspondence. This event forced members of the imperial family and Petersburg society to finally “notice” Princess Yourievsky. Details of the eight months of life at the height of power are shown from both sides. The author compares the princess’s handwritten “Memoirs” with the view of the situation from the outside, as represented in the letters of imperial family members who exchanged letters bypassing the official mail. In this chapter, the author focuses on the political role of Princess Yourievsky during a short period of liberal politics in 1880-81, and on her relationship with Mikhail Loris-Melikov. The fourth part narrates the story of Catherine Yourievsky’s widowhood. Of the four decades which she spent alone, only the first few years of her life are well-known, thanks to her correspondence with Alexander III and Mikhail Loris-Melikov, as well as publication of the controversial writings of V. Laferté. The further life of the princess and her children is documented poorly, except for one aspect. The Yourievsky family’s financial problems are known in exceptional detail, because the Ministry of the Imperial Court and Nicholas 11 himself had to deal with these problems. The rest, as well as the challenging fate of the son and two daughters of Alexander II and Princess Yourievsky, can be judged only by the testimonies of a few contemporaries. The nature of the sources takes the book beyond the biographical genre and treats readers to a number of different plotlines, including the situation and standing of the Russian nobility right before the emancipation of Russia’s serfs, women’s education, the complex structure of the Russian court, the daily life of the emperor and his family, the perception of family, parenting and sexuality, etc.
