A lens consisting of several elements can be described by an equation with tens of variables. Mathematically, designing a lens is to solve this equation. The lens specifications put many limitations on the equation. The lens fabrica- tion and assembly tolerance and the property tolerance of the optical materials used add a small perturbation to every variable. I-· ! · Solving such an equation is extremely complex. Even the brutal calculating speed of a modern computer and a well-developed lens design software cannot guarantee the finding of an approximate solution. During the design process, a lens designer needs, from time to time, to evaluate the design status, to locate the problems, and to find a way to guide the computer software out of the jungle. To perform these tasks, a lens designer needs real designing experience including how to manipulate the design software. An optical expert without lens design experience will encounter difficulties when designing a complex lens.
