ZOLA arrived at this extraordinary stage in his life as a
consequence of two major events: the Dreyfus Affair
and his role in it as a campaigner for Dreyfus’s innocence.
He had taken on the highest powers in the land with his
open letter #J accuse’ and lost. Found guilty of libel, he
was fined 3,000 francs and sentenced to one year in
prison. Zola fled Paris with nothing but the clothes he
was standing in and travelled to England with no idea
when he would return.
This is the little-known story of Zola’s time in exile.
Michael Rosen has traced Zola’s footsteps from the
Gare du Nord to the incongruous surroundings of the
suburbs of south London, examining the significance
of this year and Zola’s brave and unpopular decision
to support a wrongly convicted man. Zola, as Rosen
shows, was in the eye of the storm that ripped through
France, blasting it down the middle and bringing the
fundamental nature of the French State into question.
It is a question that continues to plague the country
to this day, Meanwhile, there was a novel about birth
control and infanticide that Zola was desperate to write,
and the extremely delicate matter of the relationships with
the two women in his life, one the mother of his children,
the other his wife.
