Joyce Daîness Mlenga îs a lecturer în
Theology and Religious Studies at the
University of Livingstonia, Laws Campus,
at which she is also serving as Dean of the
Faculty of Education. She obtained her
Master of Divinity Degree with a bias in
Christian Education from Nairobi
Evangelical Graduate School of Theology
(now known as Africa International
University] in Kenya.
She also holds a PhD in Theology and Religious Studies
obtained from Mzuzu University in Malawi. She and her
husband, Moses Mlenga (PhD), have two daughters,
Lughano and Mercy.
Over a century much of Africa south of the Sahara
embraced the Christian religion. Malawi, with 80% Christians,
is no exception, nor are the Ngonde at its northern border
with Tanzania. While it is difficult to find someone who does
not claim to be a Christian, African Traditional Religion is by
no means dead and often resorted to by many, who
consider themselves Christians. No attempts are being made
to mix the two religions, but they are both realities in many a
Christian s life, though realities of a different kind.
Joyce Mlenga, a Ngonde Christian herself, explores the
intricate and often varied relationships between the two
and tries to find out, which factors increase or decrease dual
religiosity.
