Summary
Grazyna Bacewicz, as one of the most important figures of the Polish music in
2nd half of the 20th century, a great composer and violinist, used to fascinate the
musical world at the time and to be the focus of music lovers’ attention not only in
Poland. Nevertheless, her works, characterized by exceptional individualism and
stylistic coherence, are probably not known well enough nowadays by younger
generations in particular. In three years time it will have been 50 years since
the composer passed away and that anniversary will certainly make an oppor-
tunity to read her music anew and redefine her position within the 20th-century
Polish and European artistic output. It can be already assumed that Grazyna
Bacewicz’s compositions have stood the test of time, they have not disappeared
from the concert life and they have not become just another item on the list of
the repertory acquired by young violinists or pianists. The already appearing
recordings, starting with the CD published by Deutsche Grammophon in 2011
with II Piano Sonata and two piano quintets performed by Krystian Zimerman,
Kaja Danczowska and a group of younger generation musicians, document a pe-
culiar change in the paradigm regarding the perception of Bacewiczowna - not
only as a representative of neo-classical and folkloristic movements but as an
artist inclined towards timbral and expressive experiments.
The same approach is adopted in different theoretical, analytical-critical
and musicological works. Since Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne published in
1999 a monograph by Mafgorzata Gqsiorowska, there have come out a series of
texts on the style and musical language of Bacewicz s compositions; her person
and music also appear in comprehensive presentations of the issues related to
Polish music in the 2nd half of the 20th century or in the context of particular
phenomena and music genres (e.g. Polish contemporary concerto: transformations
of the genre by Anna Nowak or 20th-century string quartet in the output of Polish

composers: transformations, trends, ideas by Ewa Kowalska-Zajqc). The Academy
of Music in Lodz, the higher education institution particularly interested in the
output and person of its patroness, held an academic conference titled Grazyna
Bacewicz - interpersonally and contextually in November 2015. The aim of the
event organized by the Chair of Theory of Music as to present the latest findings
of the research on the life and works of the composer, to put them in the context
of her relationships with different people, e.g. family members, pedagogues or
friends, as well as show them in the context of other composers works. This
book - Grazyna Bacewicz. The Contexts of Life and Works - is an outcome of that
conference and reflects, to some extent, the dual idea behind it. What the authors
of following texts confirm in their reflections is the fact that it is hard to separate
art from life in the case of an artist, as subsequent events from the biography are
inseparably connected with particular compositions and the circumstances in
which certain works were written find their reflection in the applied forms and
means. Close personal relationships affect aesthetic views of artists and their
artistic choices are often conditioned by both deep experience and evanescent
impressions.
The friendship between Grazyna Bacewicz and Stefan Kisielewski was
certainly based on generational bonds, shared occupation-related experiences
but first of all - on the closeness of their artistic temperaments. In the text Two
on a swing (of Neoclassicism): Bacewicz - Kisielewski, Malgorzata Gqsiorowska
(also the author of the monograph on Kisielewski s life and works) draws a co-
lourful portrayal of the two composers and characterizes their outputs with
regard to Neoclassicism that is not always understood in the same way. Beata
Bolesfawska-Lewandowska, in turn, in her article The music of the times of terror?
Orchestral overtures of Grazyna Bacewicz and Andrzej Panufnikfrom the time of
German occupation compares the two aforementioned compositions in the spirit
of hermeneutical exegesis, indicating the symbolic undertone of their motives.
Two friends in occupied Warsaw and such different compositions in terms of
expression...
There is still little information available in Poland about the composer’s
younger brother, Vytautas Bacevicius (Grazyna’s elder brother, Kiejstut, is also
the patron of the Academy of Music in Lodz). Krzysztof Droba throws light on
the background of and reasons for that situation (Vytautas Bacevicius who did
not exist...). The fate of the artist - now considered one of the leading modern-
ists of Lithuanian music - as well as the reception of his interesting music were
both stigmatized by History, so cruel to our region of the world. Based on his
correspondence (published for the first time) and conversations with Grazyna
and Witold’s siblings - Kiejstut and Wanda, the author investigates the reasons
behind Bacevicius absence (as a composer) in Poland, and at the same time

perfectly reflects the spirit of times - that of reading between the lines . The
ability of reading between the lines is also required when interpreting archival
materials; in the Postscriptum to the book one can find a report What do we know
about the circumstances ofKiejstut, Witold, and Wanda Bacewicz s birth?
on the findings made by Maciej Janik from the State Archives in todz. The author
tells puzzling stories about the place of the siblings’ birth, often questioning the
state of knowledge to date.
In the next two texts (following the article on the composer s brother Witold),
their authors examine the issue of influence exerted on the composer by her two
teachers: Milosz Bazelak characterizes the relation between Bacewiczowna and
Kazimierz Sikorski ( Professor,; mentor, friend - on the role
in the life and artistic activity of Grazyna whereas Magdalena Grajter
presents an inadequately explored biography of Antoni Dobkiewicz, one of the
most important figures of the pre-war music culture of todz [Antoni Dobkiewicz
- a contribution to the portrayal of the pianist-pedagogue). What is worth noting
here is a rich archival material, published partly for the first time.
The next three articles show aesthetic views of Grazyna Bacewicz, her philos-
ophy of composition and priorities behind that thinking, as well as the position
of her works within the main stylistic trends singled out in the Polish music of
the 2nd half of the 20th century: Vitalism, Neoclassicism and Sonorism. On the
grounds of binary oppositions existing in Grazyna Bacewicz’s stylistics: universal

presents the synthesis of Bacewicz’s views and evolution of the composer’s style.
Iwona Lindstedt [Sonoristic Neoclassicism of Grazyna Bacewicz) puts forward the
thesis of a mutual complementation of Neoclassical genotype with sonoristic
phenotype” in the mature phase of the composer’s artistic activity. Agata Sto-
jewska [Within the trend ofvitalistic colorism: Karol Szymanowski Grazyna
Bacewicz. Similarities and differences) attempts, in turn, to show the extent to
which coloristic vitalism of Bacewicz’s music - a sort of Karol Szymanowski s
legacy - results from analogous folkloristic fascinations in both composers and
the extent to which it turns into a manifestation of dynamic beauty whose
sources are changing colors, arranging the narration of expressive sonorities”.
The group of texts devoted to formal issues and technical solutions applied in
the genres that were so numerously represented in Grazyna Bacewicz’s output
opens with a text by Tomasz Tarnawczyk on the historical context of her sym-
phonies [Symphonies of Grazyna Bacewicz against the social-political backdrop
of the post-war Poland). Ewa Kowalska-Zajqc characterizes transformations of
the manner in which the composer treated the classical model of string quartet
[Modifications of genre traditions in string quartets by Grazyna Bacewicz). The
author proves that “it was just the model of the genre that remained [for Bace-

wicz] an ideal place to present all the aspects of her artistic temperament and
sonoristic imagination”.
The next two authors, Tomasz Krol [G Bacewicz: sonatas for violin and
piano - performance-related aspects in the context of instrumental technique
acteristics) and Piotr K^dzierski [Piano works of Grazyna Bacewicz and pianistic
idiom in the music of Witold Lutoslawski) characterize on the grounds of their
substantial performance experience1 idiomatic properties of instrumental tech-
nique presented in violin and piano pieces of the composer. Bacewicz was, as it
is commonly known, a virtuoso violinist pursuing an intensive concert activity
up to a point but she also had considerable pianistic skills, which can be noticed
when comparing her piano works with those by Lutostawski. The book finishes
with two articles by debutantes - music theory students from the Lodz Academy:
Jan Rogacki [Technical experiment. Dodecaphonic technique in VIString quartet of
Grazyna Bacewicz) and Marta Wlodarczyk [“Desire . On the last composition of
Grazyna Bacewicz ). The papers were written as part of the seminar run by Prof,
dr hab. Ryszard Daniel Golianek and through analytical reflections concerning
the field of dodecaphonic technique on the one hand and genealogical-histori-
cal considerations on the other one, they provide proof of a genuine interest in
Bacewicz s works also among the iPod generation representatives.
