In the Theatre of Romanticism analyses these plays, in the context of London theatre at the time, and argues that Romantic discourse on theatre is crucial to constructions of nationhood in the period. The book focuses primarily on Coleridge and on the middle stage of his career, during which he wrote most extensively for and about the theatre. But its discussion of anxieties about women in Coleridge's plays applies just as forcefully to the history plays of the second-generation romantic poets, and to the best-known romantic writers on theatre: Hazlitt, Hunt and Lamb. Carlson Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1994 1 online resource (xiii, 267 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Cambridge studies in Romanticism 5 Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Constituting bodies politic and theatric -- Coleridge's German revolution: Schiller's Wallenstein -- A stage for potential men -- Romantic anti-theatricalism: surveilling the beauties of the stage -- Conclusion: a theatre of remorse English Romanticism has long been considered an 'undramatic' and 'anti-theatrical' age, yet Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats all wrote plays and viewed them as central to England's poetic and political reform. Unlike the few existing studies of romantic drama, this study considers the plays not as closet drama or 'mental theatre', but as theatrical contributions to the debate sparked off by the Revolution in France Coleridge, Samuel Taylor / 1772-1834 / Knowledge / Performing arts Coleridge, Samuel Taylor / 1772-1834 / Dramatic works Schiller, Friedrich / 1759-1805 / Wallenstein Coleridge, Samuel Taylor 1772-1834 (DE-588)118521500 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1780-1830 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1789-1830 gnd rswk-swf Wissen English drama / 19th century / History and criticism / Theory, etc Nationalism in literature Sex role in literature Women in literature Romanticism Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Drama (DE-588)4012899-4 gnd rswk-swf Romantik (DE-588)4050491-8 gnd rswk-swf Frau Motiv (DE-588)4113617-2 gnd rswk-swf Theater (DE-588)4059702-7 gnd rswk-swf Nationalismus (DE-588)4041300-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Drama (DE-588)4012899-4 s Geschichte 1789-1830 z 1\p DE-604 Romantik (DE-588)4050491-8 s 2\p DE-604 Geschichte 1780-1830 z 3\p DE-604 Coleridge, Samuel Taylor 1772-1834 (DE-588)118521500 p Frau Motiv (DE-588)4113617-2 s 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 Theater (DE-588)4059702-7 s 6\p DE-604 Nationalismus (DE-588)4041300-7 s 7\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03963-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-44428-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511553448 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
