Zakon o izmjenama i dopuni Zakona o blagdanima, spomendanu i neradnim danima u Republici Hrvatskoj (2001). Narodne novine, br. 96, 2. studenoga 2001. 309 SUMMARY The main incentive for the research of the symbolic dimension of Croatian national identity was the need to turn sociological attention to this aspect of social reality, which is continually and tirelessly debated upon within Croatian public discourse, but unjustly ignored in scientific research. The aim of this book is to determine the meanings of the symbolic threads from which the fabric of contemporary Croatian identity is woven, in order to gain a more complete picture of its nature, places of agreement on its fundamental meanings, as well as the reasons for continuing contestation of meaning of some Croatian national symbols. Existing sociological literature on nations and nationalism often ignores national symbolism as a legitimate subject of scientific research. The reason for this is, primarily, the lack of understanding of: the definition of symbols and their key characteristics, the role of symbols in identity construction, and the role of the actors who are a part of that process. When national symbols are examined in literature, they are mostly observed with a sole focus on the periods of so-called „hot nationalism when they are most visible, such as the period of the formation of contemporary Croatian society and state in the 1990s. However, the role of national symbols in the sustenance of constructed national systems remains equally impor- tant, such as Croatian national system over the past 2.5 years. In addition, national symbols are more often examined from the macro-perspective of political and intellectual elite who are involved in their construction and promotion, while the micro-perspective of so-called „ordinary citizens as receivers of symbolic messages is largely ignored. This book examines the intrinsic role of national symbols as the carriers of mea- nings of nations and nation-states in their construction and sustenance, and the integral role of so-called „ordinary citizens whose agreement 310 Hrvatski simbolički identitet on fundamental national values is seen as crucial for the stability and maintenance of the national system. Since the formation of contemporary Croatian nation-state in the 1990s until today, there is a visible ambiguity in Croatian society regarding the symbolic dimension of national identity. On the one hand, a number of the symbols that visually and auditorily overwhelmed Croatian public and private spaces in the 1990s (flags, songs, celebrations of national holi- days, national monuments etc.) has significantly decreased. However, at the same time, there are continuous discussions within Croatian public discourse, which at times turn into real conflicts, regarding the meanings of the symbols of contemporary Croatian national identity. Readers will without much difficulty recall a number of such discussions, such as the ones recorded over only the past two years: the design of Croatian coat of arms on new car plates; placing of „hand to heart during the national anthem; the use of presidential stash during presidential inauguration; the need to celebrate national holidays and proper ways in which natio- nal holidays should be celebrated, as well as renewed discussions about the changes of dates of commemoration of some of the most important national holidays, such as the Statehood Day; the use of terminology „citizens of Croatia or „Croats in addressing the Croatian public; placement of bilingual signs in Latin and Cyrillic scripts in towns such as Vukovar; moving of the statue of former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz from the presidential office; the initiative to change the name of the capital Zagreb s Marshal Tito s Square; placing of monuments of the first Croatian president Franjo Tuđman, and naming of parks, squares, streets and Zagreb s airport after him; never-ending topics of Ustaše and Partizani, fascists and anti-fascists; the display of symbolism from the period of Nazi Germany marionette Independent State of Croatia during music concerts or sport events; the display of Roman-Catholic symbo- lism in schools; demonstrations by so-called „Veterans from Savska 66 regarding Croatian War veterans position in society; selling of or giving into concession national assets such as national highways; protection and representation of Croatian national identity within the European Union; and many more. The question that we ask in the book is the following: How can we explain the fact that, on the one hand, we are witnessing a significant decrease in the engagement of Croatian citizens with the symbolic content of their national identity, together with the lack of effort by the ruling elite in its Summary 311 promotion, while, on the other hand, almost every part of the symbolic repertoire is continually debated upon within Croatian public discour՝ se? Are we looking at an example of so-called „banal nationalism , as Micheál Billig (1995) termed it, which presents itself as a „cooling down of „heated nationalism, and which naturally accompanies the stabiliza- tion of a nation or state after the initial period of its establishment? And if so, can existing discussions, and even conflicts, regarding the meanings of some Croatian national symbols be explained by their natural multi- vocality, as well as by the fact that identities are necessarily dynamic pro- cesses open to (re-)interpretation? Or, are we faced with a more serious issue of a national identity that remains „heated , and that has not had time or opportunity to consolidate within the collective consciousness of the citizens, through their agreement on fundamental national values carried by its symbolic dimension? And, if so, what are the reasons for this, as well as potential consequences for Croatian national system? A more complete answer to this question can only be given by turning our research focus to the meanings of the symbols of contemporary Croatian national identity as they are attributed by so-called „ordinary Croatian citizens, who are key actors in the process of identity building and su- stenance of national systems of nations and nation-states. It should be explained that the experiences of citizens are far from „ordinary , and that this term is used only to more clearly separate the political elite from citizens who are not professionally involved in politics. In the first introductory part of the book, we bring the discussion of key terms and issues in sociological and related literature regarding national symbolism and their role in the construction and sustenance of national identity. By resolving these difficulties, relying primarily on structural and identity theory of symbolic interactionism, as well as on micro-soci- ological perspective, we present main theoretical framework of the book. In the second main part of the book, we bring the results of a qualitative empirical research conducted in 2013 among N=85 Croatian citizens, using the method of deep semi-structured interviews. They discuss the meanings of Croatian national symbols for them personally, as well as Croatian society and state. The aim of the research was to determine the meanings citizens attribute to 26 groups of national symbols selected from contemporary Croatian symbolic repertoire through following dimensions of meanings: recognition of symbols as national; importance of symbols of national identity in personal ; dedication to selected national symbols in personal and public lives (e.g. display of national 312 Hrvatski simbolički identitet flag in private lives, engagement in public celebrations of the Statehood Day etc.); and importance of selected national symbols for Croatian society (fellow citizens, national collective) and state (sovereignty). The discussi- on of the results is presented after each set of symbols, as well as brou- ght together in the conclusion of the book. The results reveal that while there is a common agreement on the meanings of a number of Croatian national symbols, such as the national anthem, national flag, national territory and Croatian language, there are, however, issues surrounding a larger number of the symbols, which stand as an obstacle to citizens identification with these symbols as part of their national identity. There is an obvious ambiguity, conflicts of meaning and rejection of some symbols as national. Based on the theoretical framework and empirical research, we conclude that more efforts are necessary in consolidating the solidarity among Croatian citizens through the strengthening of the symbolic dimension of Croatian national identity.
