| adam_text | STUDIES IN THE POPULAR LITERATURE
“Studies in the popular literature” (Hulumtime në
letërsinë popullore) is the result of the work of many years
of studies of the popular songs that treat important historical
events in Kosova and elsewhere as well as distinguished
national heroes who played a very important part in the
liberation of Kosova from the invaders during the centuries.
These developments and historical events immortalized in
the historical epic songs by creating a poetic vision for the
future.
The book, divided into three parts, which take their
shape according to the themes of the songs, which include
published and unpublished studies written during the 1997 -
2004 period. They are included here after reviews of what
regards contents as well as linguistic and stylistic aspects.
The problems treated in this book are different, as the
historical events and their actors are. They begin with the
historical developments in Kosova since the Ottoman and
Serbian occupation up to the present times dealing with
issues such as the contribution of well-known figures in the
national movement, in linguistics, literature, folklore etc.
The relation of the oral tradition towards the cultivated

literature is treated as well, highlighting the works of
different scholars on these two major mainstreams; and also
there are treated the critical evaluation of some published
works which mark distinguished achievements in the fields
of arts, folklore and science.
The first part of the book deals with the fate of our
people during historical developments, through permanent
fights against foreign invaders who tried to exterminate the
national feeling, consciousness and activity with harsh
reprisals until the last war in Kosova on 1999.
The history of our people tells the story of great
national dramas. There is no place in Kosova - even the
smallest one - lacking a painful biography of robberies,
sufferings, burnings, killings, persecutions and
displacements; on the other hand having a biography of
pride, resistance, fighting and sacrifice in front of different
invaders.
There are too many events marked by the individual
and collective resistance and sacrifice of Albanians to
oppose the genocide put into practice from Yugoslavia and
Serbia. This chronicle is witnessed our historical reality and
the folklòric heritage. Different memorial, historical and
folklòric data claim for the fact that in Kosova and the
surrounding localities many houses were razed to the
ground, as well as kulla-s, and whole quarters and villages.
They speak a language of pain, rancor and hate.
Paul Elyard rightly asserted once: “Injustices ignite
the fire of justice”. It is as if this thought makes an argument
for the tragedy of Albanians living in their ethnic lands
included within the boundaries of Serbia, Macedonia and
Montenegro. The World War II made that Kosova and other

Albanian-inhabited territories to remain out of the
internationally recognized Albanian state, under a foreign
rule, which caused to our people many individual and
collective injustices. The period since 1945 to the present
times can be regarded as the most tragic period for Kosova.
Serbia always implemented - secretly and publicly - its plans
for our physical extermination from these territories by
forcibly displacing us. It first disarmed Albanians and then
chased and killed them. Under the circumstances, the
harsher the violence was, the stronger the resistance and
sacrifice of Albanians were.
According to the popular historic epic songs of the
end of century, the events that took place in Drenica, in
Shala e Bajgores and in other Albanian-inhabited territories
were the bloodiest ones in history. With their dramatic,
tragic and heroic elements, they are specific in their content
and in their structure, having remained in the memory of the
people and having left such a strong impact as to be
recorded and immortalized from popular bards even though
it was forbidden to play them openly. However, they had
their way; they were sang and transmitted in a considerable
geographical space.
The events of the beginning of 1945 in Drenica, Shala
e Bajgores, Artakoll and other places of Kosova are closely
related to the names of popular leaders. Shaban Polluzha,
Mehmet Gradica, Miftar Bajraktari, Asim Luzha, Sherif
Voca, Ukshin Kova§ica, Ahmet Selaci, Aziz Zhilivoda,
Hazir Gjaka, and many others, carried out for a long time a
strong resistance, fighting to prevent the massacres of the
partisan-chetnik files, which burned and devastated
everything in their way after killing the Albanian
population.

The most important personages of these events,
according to the popular historic epics are the martyrs of
different generations who sacrificed their own lives for the
freedom of Kosova.
According to the historical epics, the bloody events
that took place in 1945 and afterwards are the most tragic
ones and relate to the military actions of the leader Shaban
Polluzha and his fighters throughout Kosova. Shaban
Polluzha fought to prevent the massacres of the Serbian
Army on Albanians. He proved himself as a visionary leader
to foresee the development of events and the perfidiousness
of Serbs. This was constantly claimed by events in Kosova,
especially in Shala e Bajgores, where the same scenarios of
violence and genocide were carried out to quell the revolt of
the population of this region.
The developments of these infamous events are
strongly reflected in the historical songs, which inform the
listener for the wars and sacrifices of Shala people in this
period, which were marked with victories and defeats. The
Albanian fighters caused great damages to their enemy. In
this time in the region of Shala e Bajgores there were these
patriots fighting for freedom: Adem Voca with his brothers
Hetem and Jashar, Ukshin Kovagica, Ahmet Selaci, Ymer
Selaci, Sherif Terstena, Aziz Zhilivoda, Osman Bunjaku
etc., who did not handed their weapons to the soldiers of
Tito.
Scenes of these events are presented in these songs
through flying bullets of the Albanian fighters, through
blusters of the mountains, clouds of smoke from the burned
houses, cries of mothers and children and through the

sacrifice of hundreds and thousands of martyrs who fell for
the freedom and independence of Kosova.
These many figures and events, the population of
Shala e Bajgores immortalized in songs and stories in order
that future generations to remember with pride the glorious
past.
The historical epic songs that include these events in
Drenica, Shala e Bajgores and other regions of Kosova
turned into a strong spokesperson of the Albanian fighters
who sacrificed their life for freedom. They transmitted the
message to future generations up to the last War of 1999,
which challenged the decisions of London’s Conference of
Ambassadors in 1913 as for what regards the injustices
caused to the Albanian people.
The development of historical events in Kosova in the
past and in the present is closely related with the well-
known national figures that with their deeds became part of
the history. Among them, there is Oso Kuka, Ibrahim Halit
Popovcit from Suka of Gjilan region, Cenë Maxhuni from
Vushtrri, and Mursel Igrishta from Selac village of Shala e
Bajgores etc.
The historical song “N’Mitrovicë na rrehi teli” tells
the story of Ibrahim Halit Popovcit, who on 1903 killed the
Russian consul in Mitrovica, who had given the order of
killing 200 Albanian fighters that were opposing the
establishment of the Russian consul in this city. This
poetical oral song has a completely political character and is
one of the most distinguished songs in the Albanian
historical epics. In its structure, the figure of Ibrahim Halit
Suka occupies the main place as what regards content and
the informative and artistic levels. The tragic and

magnificent elements are represented strongly as
philosophical and aesthetical categories, marking the
sacrifice and the individual and collective ideal of Albanians
during the course of history for freedom and independence.
In our historical popular songs, an important place is
deserved to the figure of Cen Maxhuni, who opposed for a
long time the Ottoman invasion. There are about twenty
songs and different variants on this man and all of them
praise his bravery against the Ottoman Izet pasha of Vushtrri
during 1820- 1880.
According to folklòric and archive files, the family of
Cen Maxhuni from Vushtrri was never frightened and nor it
ever made compromises with the Ottoman, Austro-
Hungarian, Serbian and Bulgarian enemies. The historical
epics claim that foreigners tried hard to suppress and
weaken their resistance. Many punitive campaigns and plans
were compiled to exterminate them.
The figure of Oso Kuka has a very wide extension in
folklore, literature and history. There are dozens of songs
and variants where his heroic fight and that of his fellow
Albanians in protecting the Albanian lands from
Montenegrin outlaws is represented. It is also represented in
the work “Lahuta e Malcis” of the writer Gjergj Fishta. The
popular songs of “Lahuta e Malcis” portray this well-known
national figure as a symbol of resistance and sacrifice for the
preservation of Albanian lands.
Mursel Igrishta was one of the Shala fighters who
fought side by side with Isa Boletini. He participated in
many battles against Turks, Serbs and Bulgarians and this
reserved him a place of honor in our historical epics. This
brave man fought against Serbian outlaws who wanted to

rob and kill his family in Selac village of Shala e Bajgores.
The song dedicated to him speaks of an expedition of
Serbian forces who exterminated completely Albanian
villages. It recalls memories of such fighting since the case
of Derne Ahmeti in Llap, 200 years before; of Ahmet Delia
in Prekaz village of Drenica region against Serbs; of Ahmet
Ademi in Strofc village of Vushtrri area against Bulgarians
and of Tahir Meha in Prekaz village of Drenica area against
the Yugoslav military and police forces. It includes the
battle of year 1998 in the house of Jasharaj family in Prekaz.
In each of these tragic events, a fighter was raised as a
shining hero of our history.
The folkloric and historical data claim that very few
people in the world during their history have had so many
disagreements and conflicts as Albanians and Serbs in the
Balkans. The genesis of their clashes dates from the coming
of Serbs in the Balkans up to the present times.
The Serb aggressive stance towards the Albanians has
been a legacy handed over generation after generation. This
conflict has been reflected first in the songs of highlanders,
according to which the clash is mainly of ethnic nature and
derives by the Serbian greed to conquer new territories and
rob Albanian legitimate properties.
The many disagreements between these to nations
during history have produced too many proverbs and
popular stories, which account for and denounce the Serbian
actions against Albanians.
These relations have shown up many ethno-
psychological features, which show the background of both
the Albanian and Serbian people. The distinctive features
are considerable and different and have been investigated

also by other people of the Balkans and of the world,
especially men of knowledge and science who have
presented them into their writings during past centuries but
also today: Hegel, Gulielm Adae (Brokadus Moncus),
Konstatin Jereqek, Leo Frendling, Hans Peter Rullman,
Miss Edith Durham and the Nobel prize winner for peace
Eli Wiesel.
This dim reality of relations between Serbs and
Albanians in this geographical space of course contains
inevitably something in common, but it is largely composed
of individual national features characteristic for different
historical periods. Even in these difficult times, there have
been moments when the rival Serbian side has praised with
admiration the Albanian bravery and fortitude, such as the
case of Mark Milan, one of the Serbian military leaders in
the times of Albanian territories conquest.
The second part of the book deals with the writings
and poetic works dedicated to Eqrem £abej, for his great
contribution on albanology and for his great and rich
activity. With professional competence, he managed to
reach the peaks of albanological achievements never
reached before from national and international scientists.
Qabej managed to give a very great contribution to the
Albanian sciences by working hard to elevate the level of
professionalism in the field of albanological studies so that
to match the most contemporary international standards.
His activity was praised in Xhevahir Spahiu’s poem
“Tek rrenja e fjaleve” and in the popular song “Kenge per
Eqrem £abejn”.
In this regard, there are also popular songs dedicated
to Haxhi Krasniqi who was a zealous activist of the national

education system and a man who worked much hard to raise
the cultural level of the population of the region where he
lived and worked. He himself gathered many folkloric
materials in the areas he traveled and a part of this rich
treasure was published in the Albanian newspapers and
magazines in Kosova and Macedonia.
A special place in this book is given to the relations of
the popular literature to works of fiction. The presence of
folklore in the Albanian fiction can be dated back since the
times of our oldest writers. It can be seen more clearly and
in a comprehensive way in the works of our Renaissance
writers, when many poets and prose writers begin to use
folklore as a means of inspiration and as a source for their
literary works.
So far, in the comparative studies on the relations of
oral literature to fiction it can be seen the folkloric strata in
the structure of the fiction works of our writers. Due to the
fusion and moldings in the individual creative laboratory,
some authors created works of great value for the national
and international literature, such as the works of Ismail
Kadare, Rexhep Qosja, Dritéro Agolli, Anton Pashku, Ali
Podrimja, Azem Shkreli etc.
The comparative studies in the field of the critical and
aesthetic thought for the relations between the oral literature
and fiction have reached a high degree of quantitative and
qualitative developments but a lot remains to be done for the
researchers to investigate all the values, which these two
fields contain.
In this context there are included also the studies
which deal with skills of thought, action and expression of
our people in complicated moments and situations,

expressed with synthesis and allegory by means of
anecdotes and different fables for specific issues.
This last genre is also dealt with in this work.
Different characters in these short allegoric stories
symbolize people and their action in society. Man has
personified a number of characters who do not speak, do not
work and act like man, but with imagination he has made
them equal, so that he judges them for their bad vices and
supports good behaviors. In the fables, the characters
formally are those who are in reality but being that they are
equipped with speaking and action they represent man and
bear the features of that special type of man they represent.
Wolf remains a wolf, the snake still bears dangerous features
and actions, the lamb, nightingale and dove are symbols of
wisdom and sweet voice.
In the third part of the book, there are included critical
evaluations on the works representing a valuable
contribution in the fields of art, folklore and science.
