I. Ukolova The Antique Heritage and the Early Medieval Culture in Western Europe This book covers a wide range of problems connected with making of the early medieval culture. In a sphere of culture the beginning of the Dark Ages (from the end of the Vth to the first half of the Vllth centuries) was a boundary between two worlds — antique and medieval. Earlier the antique outlook was supplated by Christianity, which had been recognized as an official religion. Christianity began to play a main role not only in the sphere of ideology, but in the political sphere too. First of all the analysis of the genesis of the medieval culture assumes two main aspects: the determination of the place of an antique cultural heritage and the investigation of a role of Christianity in this process. These are two parts of one methodological problem: the continuity and the mode of interaction of old and new tendencies in the formation of the medieval culture. To understand the genesis of medieval culture in Western Europe it is important to take in consideration that it was first forming in the region which had been a centre of powerful, highly developed, universalistic roman civilisation. It seems to be impossible that such highly developed culture, which existed many centuries, could disappear in one moment when antique social relations and institutes were still existing and people brought up in limits of the antique culture were still living. The process of genesis of medieval culture which in mature phase was characterized by the supremacy of Church, the formation of ideology of the feudal society took several centuries and was very complicated. In the sphere of culture the role of continuity, which revealed the connec- 306 tion of human history, is especially great. The continuity between the antique world, which was condemned to destruction, and the medieval world, which was coming into being, appeared as an important factor of spiritual life of society. But this continuity was obvious not always, because the Christian type of culture, which was cristalli-zing in the West, became in some aspects the qualitative negation of the antiquity. The medieval culture made first steps, when the Roman world, which seemed to be monolithic during many centuries, was broken. The barbarians invaded Europe and settled there. Numerous barbarian kingdoms arose and fell. Though in the Early Middle Ages the barbarisation of cultural, life in the West increased and cultural institutions fell into decay, the intellectual processes came to a standstill, the antique roots of the medieval civilization could not be rejected. It was not a straight continuity with classical antiquity. Really, many works of antique authors, many achievements of the antique knowledge were forgotten in the Early Middle Ages, some of them were lost forever. But it is necessary to keep in mind that barbarisation and decadence appeared not in the Dark Ages, but earlier in the late Antiquity (in III—IV c.). The cultural heritage adopted by the Middle Ages was not and could not be the classical antique heritage. The late Roman tradition played the main role in making of early medieval culture. First of all it was continued by Boethius, who had formulated the principles of education and of the universe of reasoning, the range of problems, which became traditional for the philosophy of the Middle Ages. Cas-siodorus, the founder of Vivarium created an original form of organisation of the cultural life which had been based on his conception of coexistence of the antique erudition and the Christian aloqmence. The encyclopaedic method of Isidore of Seville opened great perspectives for the further development of the medieval culture. Principles of an old culture may be adopted by a new culture not only by immediate acquaintance with the works of prominent thinkers and writers. Intellectual dominants of the culture usually are dessolved in social psychology, circulate in forms more accessible for consciousness of mass, they can be assimilated not at first, but at second hand. So it have been with many values of the antique culture, which in primitive forms were adopted by the 307 Middle Ages through the school and ordinary tradition of social life. Christianity played the certain role in adoption of antique spiritual heritage; and though Christianity had rejected the pagan culture but it could not be separated from it at all. The Fathers of the Church rather resolutely introduced the elements of antique intellectual doctrines into their works. Sometimes it was done to attract the great pagans as their supporters, sometimes for the destructive criticism. But in the both cases the fragments of antique authors’ works maintained and were reproduced in such a way. Transforming and simplificating the antique heritage nevertheless became the necessary component of the intellectual synthesis of the Middle Ages though Christianity was the main factor of its integration. The Christianity of the late antiquity and of the early Middle Ages was in essence a rather receptive ideological form (though had a very categorical doctrine) which adopted some features of popular consciousness of that time. The medieval culture formed not only under conditions of the decline of an old and powerful culture and consolidation of Christianity. The spiritual life of barbarians was the third importante root of the mediaeval culture. Transforming cultural values of the antique world, Christian images, views obtained new forms of social functioning. The barbarian world not only slowly adopted them, but made them its own. The genesis of the early medieval culture was a complex process of the synthesis of late antique, Christian and barbarian traditions with the gradual reinforcement of Christianity. Christianity becoming the dominant of the intellectual, «high» culture of the Middle Ages, nevertheless could not absorbe and override the deepest layers of popular consciousness. In that period the definite type of organization of the spiritual life of western society was crystallizing. The Christian religion began to play the main role in it. This feature became the dominant typological indication of the medieval culture in Western Europe. Christian ideological complex had to be the basic element of the feudal culture, the centre of a cultural system. All cultural phenomena and processes were refracted through it. They interracted, merged with it or resisted this complex.
