Beschreibung: | Includes bibliographical references and index This book is concerned with rethinking learning in new times so that we are able to engage young children and immerse them in environments that connect with their lifeworlds. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of the early years in the establishment of learning dispositions and attitudes that impact on later experiences and success in schools. One aspect of this new learning is the realization that becoming literate requires an extension of traditional conceptualizations of print literacy. We now need to embrace the new literacies required for electronic communication that enable children to become citizens who are able to function effectively and make a valuable contribution to society. We also explore how information and communications technologies (ICT) have opened up the world so that young people are able to extend the boundaries of their meaning making and their social interactions. This book examines the relationships between the personal, social and educational experiences of children and explores the ways in which they are influenced by the use multiple modes of communication and the use of new technologies that enable them to make meaning in multimodal environments. These experiences have important implications for the ways in which we conceptualize learning environments including schooling and the nature of the curriculum that we construct for students in the 21st century |
