500 | |a The cultural phenomenon known as "decadence" has often been viewed as an ephemeral artistic vogue that fluorished briefly in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe. This study makes the case for decadence as a literary movement in its own right, based on a set of aesthetic principles that formed a transitional link between romanticism and modernism. Understood in this developmental context, decadence represents the aesthetic substratum of a wide range of fin-de-siecle literary schools, including naturalism, realism, Parnassianism, aestheticism, and symbolism. As an impulse toward modernism, it prefigures the thematic, structural, and stylistic concerns of later literature. David Weir demonstrates his thesis by analyzing a number of French, English, Italian, and American novels, each associated with some specific decadent literary tendency. The book concludes by arguing that the decadent sensibility persists in popular culture and contemporary theory, with multiculturalism and postmodernism representing its most current manifestations | ||

The book concludes by arguing that the decadent sensibility persists in popular culture and contemporary theory, with multiculturalism and postmodernism representing its most current manifestations Flaubert, Gustave 1821-1880 Salammbô (DE-588)4099185-4 gnd rswk-swf Gide, André 1869-1951 (DE-588)118539124 gnd rswk-swf Goncourt, Edmond de 1822-1896 Germinie Lacerteux (DE-588)4301173-1 gnd rswk-swf Huysmans, Joris-Karl 1848-1907 À rebours (DE-588)4269303-2 gnd rswk-swf Joyce, James 1882-1941 (DE-588)118558501 gnd rswk-swf Pater, Walter 1839-1894 Marius the Epicurean (DE-588)4417883-9 gnd rswk-swf Décadentisme Modernisme (Littérature) TRAVEL / Special Interest / Literary bisacsh LITERARY CRITICISM / General bisacsh Decadence (Literary movement) fast Modernism (Literature) fast Letterkunde gtt Decadentie gtt Modernisme (cultuur) gtt Literatur Decadence (Literary movement) Modernism (Literature) Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Dekadenzliteratur (DE-588)4070266-2 gnd rswk-swf Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 gnd rswk-swf Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Dekadenzliteratur (DE-588)4070266-2 s 1\p DE-604 Huysmans, Joris-Karl 1848-1907 À rebours (DE-588)4269303-2 u 2\p DE-604 Pater, Walter 1839-1894 Marius the Epicurean (DE-588)4417883-9 u 3\p DE-604 Joyce, James 1882-1941 (DE-588)118558501 p 4\p DE-604 Goncourt, Edmond de 1822-1896 Germinie Lacerteux (DE-588)4301173-1 u 5\p DE-604 Gide, André 1869-1951 (DE-588)118539124 p 6\p DE-604 Flaubert, Gustave 1821-1880 Salammbô (DE-588)4099185-4 u 7\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-87023-991-5 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-87023-992-2 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=13944 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
