SUMMARY
Profound social, economic and cultural changes were
carried out in Bulgarian villages in the period 1948-1960.
They resulted from the transformation of the private agri-
culture into cooperative farming. This process began in the
second half of the 1940s, initially in the lowland areas of the
country, and ended in 1958—1960 in the mountainous and
poor regions. The objective was ubiquitous formation of co-
operative farms, including private agricultural land, forests,
inventory and husbandry.
The purpose of this study is to show how peasants’
everyday life and culture changed after the establishment of
the socialist collectivization in the Bulgarian villages; what
was the organization of labor and social environment of the
cooperative farms, how people remember and talk about the
process. The findings were based on a fieldwork research
carried out in two villages — Mezdreya, part of the Berkovitsa
region in Northwestern Bulgaria and Brestovitsa, included in
the Plovdiv region and on the analysis of cooperative docu-
ments and archives.
The field work was conducted in 2006-2008 as part of
the project “Bulgarian twentieth century. Collective memory
and national identity” — (TKNI—MES) with supervisor Assoc.
Prof. Anna Luleva. The methodology of the research included
conducting biographical and thematic interviews, analyzing

of archival documents and photographs. The chronological
framework of the study is conditional and it doesn’t refer to
the beginning and end of collectivization. The accent is not
on the historical and political procedure for the implementa-
tion of the process, but its local aspects in the ethnological
perspective. Therefore the initial border I accepted 1948 — the
year in which the establishment of the first socialist coopera-
tives began, i.e. — the social fact is important. The final bor-
der is also conditional and it was determined by the second
objective of the research — the study of the collectivization’s
impact on everyday life in the villages. Therefore I accepted
1970 as the end of approximately 10-year-period after the
end of the collectivization. Thus it makes it possible to trace
the social and cultural transformations in both categories of
villages — from early and late implementation of collectivi-
zation.
The introduction of the book includes the main research
questions, research methods and fundamental concepts: col-
lectivization, cooperation, massovization, memory, trauma,
generational groups, modernization, the relations between
“authority” and “people”. This part involves also the prob-
lems of collectivization in the research field of ethnology.
Chapter One presents the official socialist project of col-
lectivization, which was conceived by the party leaders and
the ideologists. It examines the ideological ideas and propa-
ganda aspects of the project of “socialist reconstruction of
the Bulgarian village”. The analysis is dedicated to the state
leaders and ideologists’ perceptions of the process of collec-
tivization, the structure and organization of the cooperative
farms. The delineation of the pillars of the ideological project
through which the authority legitimized its actions, makes
possible the identification of the discrepancies between the
policy of the socialist regime and the actual results of the
transformational processes in the village.

Chapter Two is devoted to the establishment of collec-
tivization in two specific villages. Local stories are examined
comparatively to the macro-historical context for the whole
country. This chapter presents the socio-economic develop-
ment of the two communities until the collectivization and
the contexts in which it was implemented. A historical over-
view of the process (the creation of the cooperative farms to
their mass implementation) is presented on the bases of the
analysis of cooperative documents. The emphasis is on the
collectivization as a site of collective memory and on the way
it was experienced by the population of the two villages.
Chapter Three is devoted to everyday life in coopera-
tives. The study is based on the analysis of biographical in-
terviews and recollections of former cooperative members
about the work and life in the cooperative farms, but it is
primarily based on the analysis of cooperative documents.
The main topics in the research are: the cooperatives’ man-
agement and the organization of labor, the status, rights and
obligations of the cooperative management and cooperative
members; relations and conflicts between them and what
caused them, the formation of new social structures and hier-
archies, and the social position of women in the cooperative.
Chapter Four focuses on the cooperatives’ impact on the pro-
cess of modernization in the socialist villages and the changes
in everyday life, on the architectural renovation and cultural
development in rural regions.
The conclusion includes the summary of the survey re-
sults.
