Abstract
This paper examines how power relations affect and shape
the positioning, discourses and practices of Albanian immi-
grants in Greek society and in the health care system. By look-
ing at Greek migratory policies, relationships in the labour
market, practices of social exclusion, police violence and rep-
resentations of Albanian immigrants, the social reality and
experiences of immigrants are analysed. The emphasis is on
how their social position and power relations affect their sta-
tus in the health care system, their perception of health and
the relationship between the Greek doctor and Albanian im-
migrant patient. These issues are illustrated with reference to
ethnographic data, gathered during fieldw ork research among
Albanian immigrants in Athens.
