One-stop reference for the state of the art of surface self-assemblies in ionic
liquids with contributions from world-class authorities on both ILs and surfactant
self-assemblies.
The research field of ionic liquids (ILs), which are salts with a melting point below 100°C, began
in 1914 with an observation of Paul Walden, who reported on the room temperature liquid salt
ethylammonium nitrate (FAN). While it did not garner significant attention then, literatures on IL
studies are rapidly growing now. ILs are frequently termed “green solvents” or “designer solvents”
because of their unique and attractive physicochemical properties. They are being considered as
future solvents for catalysis, chemical reactions, extractions, electrochemical purposes, and many
other potential applications.
Attesting to its prominence in colloid and surface chemistry, as well as in the developing areas of
modern physical chemistry, technology, and engineering, Ionic Liquid-Based Surfactant Science:
Formulation, Characterization, and Applications covers a diversity of current research and
applications of the field. This monograph:
• Emphasizes the synthesis of ILs of different types and stabilization of amphiphilic self-
assemblies in conventional and newly developed ILs to reveal formulation, physicochemical
properties, microstructures, internal dynamics, and thermodynamics

relation to their fundamental characteristics and theories

BIDYUT K. PAUL, Ph.IX, is Professor at Surface and Colloid Science Laboratory of Indian
Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in science (physical chemistry)
from Jadavpur University. He has published 42 original research papers, 6 review articles, 4 book
chapters, and 1 edited book. He has served as a member of organizing committee of various national
and international conferences. Professor Paul is one of the Associate Editors of the Journal of Surface
Science and Technology.
SATYA P. MOULIK, Ph.D., DSc, is Fellow and Honorary Scientist, Indian National Science
Academy, and Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the Centre for Surface Science, Jadavpur University,
Kolkata, India. He is the Editorial Advisor of the Journal of Surface Science and Technology, Associate
Editor of Journal of Surfactants and Detergents, and the former President of the Indian Society for
Surface Science and Technology. He has published 344 original research papers, 13 review articles, 6
book chapters, and 1 edited book. Professor Moulik has been associated with different national and
international conferences as Chairperson/ Member of the organizing committees.
