adam_text Resume Although most of Becej households, as well as households in many other towns, possessed no radio before, during and immediately after the WWII, Becej distinguished itself by rich musical life. Music was performed everywhere, and in the dusk, young people gathered at, street corners, known as rogalj . There were played tamburltza 1, bagpipe or accordion, amusing youngsters before repose. On some special occasions, music was performed in hotel ballrooms and in pubs. It was not unusual to hear someone singing while working in the house or in the garden, so we can say that music was part of everyday life. In such a milieu, Janika Balaz was born on December 23rd 1925, in a willage close to Zrenjanin, named Lukino Selo. Janika s parents moved shortly after his birth to Becej, in part of the town called Putrije, while he was still a little boy. Unfortunately, changing a place of living brought no peace into their household and as we follow his history, we see the divorce of his parents. As Janika was quite close to his mother, he stayed with her and, consequently, his family name was changed from father s Rac to mother s Balaz. Janika was surrounded by music. Famous dulcimer player who was famous in Budapest was Janika s grandfather, while his father Bella was known as an excellent contrabass player. When the story spread around that Janika was on his way to become a musician as well, many people were sure that great a future was before him. Talent and hard work in classes with several teachers, led young Balaz to family Kozarski s tamburitza orchestra. After the WW II he moved a lot to different places. After he spent some time in Montenegro capital, he moved to Novi Sad in mid fifties of last century, where a Great tamburitza orchestra of Radio Novi Sad was formed, after some political instructions. Janika Balaz was one of orchestra musicians and later he was promoted to concert maestro. He was very well known and successful musician, who performed not only on radio, but also in concerts, took part in recordings, worked on film and television. Together with seven other tamburitza performers Janika Balaz frequently gave concerts and was part of manifestations of the time. For many years his small orchestra was the most charming part of Petrovaradin fortress restaurant. He was famous for many things, among others, as the only one who managed to produce such a tender sound on taburitza, which was close to sophisticated sound of violin strings. His playing technique was rich, and he was well known as virtuoso. His improvisations were magnificent, and his tender contact with his instrument was of the sort that created maximum that one instrument can perform. He was always ready to experiment and look for new potentialities. He was and is until now a unique and unrepeatable tamburitza player. 1 Traditional string instrument Janika Balaž will be remembered as person who opened doors for Roma music, person who took Roma music out of pubs and brought it to concert halls, even the most elite concert halls. Janika Balaž and his orchestra were very well known across former Yugoslavia, in many parts of Europe, in North Africa as well as in the USA. They performed in Paris, world famous concert hall Olympia not just as a support orchestra for Olivera Vučo, where only world famous and recognized musicians are invited to perform. He presented his art of music to many world leaders and among others to Queen Elisabeth II. Although her majesty was well known as composing person, she congratulated him without hesitation, saying that she will never forget those moments when she heard his music. Even American astronauts, members of the Apollo 11 crew, spent an evening at Petrovaradin fortress, enjoying music that Janika and his orchestra Osam tamburaša Janike Balaža performed, On their world tour Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins tour visited Yugoslavia as well, and were greeted by Janika Balaž at the beautiful fortress, settled on the bank of river Danube. By protocol it was planned that astronauts will spend two hours at the restaurant, but they stayed much longer, creating an alarm in their team. But, as it was later seen, there was no reason for any panicking; when security team arrived, they saw the Americans in great mood, enjoying In music of Janika and his orchestra. Janika and his orchestra were very well received by audience of all ages, young and old, citizens as well as world leaders. Sound of his pearl tamburitza was a balm for all wounds, his music evoked tears as well as joy and laughter; his music was good for love and sorrow, for bringing people together as well as for those that suffered of broken hearts. Two very popular compositions are dedicated to great maestro Janika Balaž: Primaš and Osam tamburaša sa Petrovaradina . For his accomplishment in arts of music Janika was honored by Josip Broz Tito with Order of the Republic with Silver Wreath, City of Novi Sad honored him with the October Award, and during his long career he was given many other awards, acknowledgments, and plaques. Since 2000 International tamburitza festival Bisernica Janike Balaža has been organized in Novi Sad. Great part in Festival s organization is done by members of NGO Janika Balaž Novi Sad, city in which Janika lived most of his life, raised a monument in order to honor this great musician, settled near the river banks of Danube, made by sculptor Laslo Siladi. One of city s streets was named after him as well. Janika Balaž died in Novi Sad on September 10th 1988.
