Czechoslovak Legionnaires Ordinary
and Extraordinary Days in Russia (1914-1918)
This volume focuses on the topic of everyday life during World War I.
More precisely, the book shows Czechoslovak volunteers in Russia (so-
-called Czechoslovak legionnaires) and their wartime experience. In Sep-
tember 1914, there was established the first Czech army unit in the frame
of the Russian Army. The unit was called The Czech Company and shou-
ld have been structured as an infantry battalion. It represented the wishes
of a number of émigrés who wanted to use the Russian tsar’s support in
order to pursue the Bohemian (Czechoslovakian) freedom from Austria-
- Hungary.
The book consists of four chapters. The first chapter called simply
Czech Company follows the roots and first weeks of existence of the abo-
ve mentioned unit. There are discussed some problems connected with
Russian military authorities and their attitude toward the Czechoslovak
movement. However, the main stress is laid on creating the bond within
the unit; on soldiers everyday life, on their boarding, clothing, free time
etc. The chapter is concluded by the unit’s departure for the front.
The second chapter Captured deals with the question of thousands
and thousands POWs and their faith in Russian POW camps. It is ne-
cessary to point out, that POWs of Czech (Slovak) origin are main cha-
racters of the chapter. The text shows both everyday life in camps and
possible motivation for entering Czechoslovak volunteer army - growing
from one weak battalion into a rifle regiment, a rifle brigade and finally
into Czechoslovak army corps consisting of two rifle divisions. Several of
the topics were discussed here for the first time ever.
The third chapter At the Front tries to outline the real fighting expe-
rience. Czechoslovak troops were not used as regular forces (by the way,
they did not have training for that) but they served mostly as reconnai-
ssance parties along the whole length of the Russian front. The chapter
shows not only fights and casualties, it analyzes the life at the front from
the point of view of units inner life, soldiers free time or their never-
-ending complaints concerning food. It is not to be omitted that a num-
ber of volunteers for the unit were still Austrian citizens who in that way
conducted high treason and while fighting at the front, they risked being
hanged if captured. And the battle of Zborov? The most famous victo-
ry (exaggerated by Czechoslovak propaganda during and after the war)
must also be mentioned.
The final part called At the Rear changes place to the area south of
Kiev. There were constructed rifle divisions from the groups of coming
volunteers (former POWs). Hundreds of problems appeared, majority of
them connected with Russian revolutions of 1917 and subsequently with
Ukrainian civil war in the spring of 1918. The chapter is based on every-
day life as the preceding ones and it also presents the terms of cohesion or
esprit de corps in the context of the Czechoslovak foreign army.
The book is concluded by a small episode of fights between retreating
Czechoslovaks and advancing German forces. In the spring of 1918, Cze-
choslovak regiments (and their supporting units) left Ukraine for France.
They were supposed to travel across Russia to Vladivostok and then by
ships to France. Nevertheless, the plans were to be changed soon.
