The twenty-one essays printed in this volume examine the medieval merchant in the round/
The economic activities of these men (and women) have been often analysed, but the authors;
here have looked beyond ■ the;ways in which merchants made money to consider their origins
and dynastic ambitions, their particular pious and charitable concerns, their literary and cultural
preoccupations, and their sense of themselves when alive, and alter death. I he volume is
lavishly illustrated with eighty-six colour plates and includes some important unpublished texts/
the will of Robert Marble, a prosperous Hereford goldsmith and a letter written in 1474 by
the mercer William Prat, friend of Caxton, to the prior of Christ Church Canterbury. The
volume also includes a new edition of the text of John Lydgate’s Mumming for the Mercers of
London performed before Mayor William Estfieid at Twelfth Night in 1438. These essays :
suggest that there was, indeed, a distinctive merchant outlook on life and death, and a class ; ,
consciousness which derived from an awareness both of lowly origins and gentry aspirations.
