- A GEOLOGIST AND AN EMINENT EXPERT
ON THE REGION OF KRAKOW
Summary
Stanisław Zaręczny was bom on 6 May, 1848, in Lvov. As the son of a military
doctor in the Austro-Hungarian army, who repeatedly changed his place of resi-
dence, Zaręczny received his primary education initially in Monza near Milan, and
then in Prague. Since the school year 1858/59 he enrolled in a secondary school in
Vienna, then he was a student of St. Anna secondary school Krakow, and Grades
VI-VIII he completed in a secondary school in Tarnów, where in 1866 he earned
a matriculation certificate. Immediately after graduation he enrolled on natural
science courses at the University of Lvov, and after three semesters he moved to
the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He successfully
passed his final exams in October 1870 and obtained a certificate of completion,
entitling him to undertake doctoral studies. The following year he was admitted
to the post of deputy assistant, then assistant in the Department of Mineralogy
headed by Prof. Alojzy Alth and worked there for two years.
Stanisław Zaręczny undertook his research in the field of botany and geology
already as a student, and carried it out in the Beskidy Mts. and around Krakow.
His first two publications were issued in 1872. A year later he was elected member
of the Physiographic Commission, which appointed him to the position of Sec-
retary of the Orographic-Geological Section and granted him financial support to
undertake geological field research in the Tatra Mts. As a result, a rich collection
of rocks and fossils was created. The collection was transferred to the collections
of the Commission. He also became a member of the newly established Tatra
Mountains Society.
At that time S. Zaręczny completed a dissertation on geological deposits and
fossil fauna of the Upper Cretaceous of Podolia. On this basis, after receiving
positive reviews and having successfully passed the exam, in January 1874 he
was awarded a doctoral degree. A few months later, he was appointed curator of
natural history collections of the Physiographic Commission of the Academy of
Arts and Sciences, where he worked on the rearrangement and cataloguing of the
Commission’s holdings. He also started to gradually work out the growing col-
lection of fossils found in Rogoźnik and Maruszyna near Nowy Targ. The result
of this study was a valuable publication, released in 1876, repeatedly cited in the
geological literature.

The next stage of his life S. Zareczny began by passing a very difficult exam
for teachers, which gave him the opportunity to get a job in secondary schools. An
appropriate certificate with a positive evaluation and honours he received on 19
December, 1875. At the beginning of the following year took up a post as assistant
teacher and teacher at the Real School and in the Institute of Industrial Technology
in Krakow, and then he was appointed teacher in the secondary school in Jaslo,
with a referral to work in St. Hyacinth Secondary School in Krakow. In 1881 he
obtained the rank of corresponding member of the Polish Geological Institute in
Vienna, as well as the title of professor of secondary school, and two years later
the Minister of Religion and Enlightenment moved him to the newly created Third
Secondary School in Krakow, where he worked for the next 16 years. In all these
schools he conducted mainly the lessons of natural history, and it was the subject
covering natural sciences, mineralogy and geology, and in lower classes he also
taught mathematics and physics. He also held the responsibilities of the head of
Natural History Room, where teaching materials and other didactic aids that aimed
at facilitating the process of teaching the subject were collected. He also conducted
extra lessons and organized excursions for students showing particular interest in
natural sciences. Some of them were later colleagues of their teacher, remembered
him in letters giving a certificate of recognition for his knowledge and admiration
for his scientific and pedagogical achievements.
In the early 1880s the Academy of Arts and Sciences took the initiative to
make and release the Geological Atlas of Galicia, which meant a development of
a detailed geological map of the area comprising approximately surface of con-
temporary Poland. Stanislaw Zareczny was one of the co-workers. He conducted
a detailed geological survey in the vicinity of Krakow, and the result was several
important publications. Then he developed a map of the Grand Duchy of Krakow
(sheets of Krakow and Chrzanow) supplemented with monographic descriptions of
geological formations. The results of this work exceeded all expectations. A very
precisely made map and its additional version, showing the geological structure
under the cover of youngest deposits, as well as a precisely structured text (290
pages + 8 plates) for a century maintained their topicality and still have a unique
value. The atlas edition of 1894 was sold out already in the first decade of the
20th century, yet the decision to reissue it did not produce any effects due to the
outbreak of the First World War. The proper measure of the value of the scientific
achievement was the decision to reissue the map and text, which was made in 1953
by the Geological Publishing House.
Another great merit of S. Zareczny was the results of the research undertaken
at the initiative of the Committee on Water Supply in Krakow. As an expert dele-
gated by the Academy of Arts and Sciences he developed a geological layout plan

approved by the City Council. His five-year activity significantly contributed to
creation of the water supply system in Bielany which started its operation in 1901.
Stanisław Zaleczny’s intensive, exhaustive and long-term work as well as the
unfriendly attitude of the scientific community, which, despite his great scientific
achievements, closed him access to university positions, caused a gradual deteri-
oration of his health and the appearance of increasing symptoms of neurasthenia.
Immediately after the end of the school year 1897/1898 he obtained a one-year
leave and went for treatment to Dalmatia, and at this time he submitted a request
to retire. In July 1899, he returned for three weeks to Krakow, and after his final
departure the National School Board positively responded to this request. In
mid-September, the deputy director of the Third Secondary School sent him a let-
ter thanking him for a long, earnest and conscientious work on the education and
upbringing of young people, and for the conduct of the study of natural history.
The first year after leaving Galicia, S. Zaręczny spent on the Dalmatian coast
and in the South Tyrol, but intensifying relapses directed him to a medical centre
in Priessnitzthal near Mödling, where he stayed for almost two years. In June 1903,
he moved to Vienna, where he remained for the next few years. The information
about his fate is preserved in letters and postcards which he sent to Krakow, to his
friend, an excellent arachnologist - Władysław Kulczyński. Zaręczny described
his impressions and included information about the geological structure and veg-
etation in the surrounding areas he used to visit. He also reported on the growing
financial difficulties, lack of research and job opportunities. Between 1906 and
1907 he was twice in that medical centre, and a year after he moved to Budapest,
where he maintained constant contact with his friend, his former pupil - Jan Bartel.
Zaręczny’s stay in Hungary, however, did not improve his health, therefore
immediately after returning to Austria again he went for half a year for treatment
to the medical centre in Priessnitzthal. After completing the treatment, on April
1, 1909, the attending physician issued him a certificate of health improvement,
which unfortunately was not confirmed by the reality.
A further increase in his disease led Stanisław Zaręczny to a nervous break-
down. The result of this was the decision expressed in his last will written on 20
July, 1909, in the German language, which begins with the words: “ habe mich
selbst getötet (‘7 killed myself’).
Three days later, he committed suicide with a revolver shot, and two days
later he was buried in a mass grave along with the homeless paupers of Vienna.
The initiative group of students and friends, and the Board of the Physiographic
Commission of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, organized a collection of vol-
untary contributions, which made up a fund supplemented by the Commission

for the Water Supply System. Thanks to this, the body of Stanislaw Zargczny
was exhumed in Vienna and transported to Krakow. After the memorial service,
held on 2 October, 1909, in St. Mary’s Church by canon priest Anthony Siuda,
Zar^czny’s pupil, and at the same time catechist at the Third Secondary School,
Zar^czny’s body was buried in the Rakowicki cemetery in a tomb located several
meters from the cemetery chapel.
Dr. Stanislaw Zar^czny was an outstanding and distinguished geologist, whose
academic career was ruined by the conditions in Krakow scientific milieu. He
was also a distinguished secondary school teacher and professor in Krakow. His
scientific articles and geological maps of the area of Krakow and Chrzanow, sup-
plemented with a monographic description of the geological structure, for over
100 years maintained their topicality and they still are the basis of knowledge
about the region. Similarly to his other publications, they have been and will be
repeatedly cited by researchers.
