adam_text | SUMMARY
VACLAV HU ML is the monograph of the founder of the Zagreb school for
violinists, Pro/. Vaclav Huml. This monograph consists of VACLAV HUMUS
BIOGRAPHY, which contains photographs and a list of Prof. HumVs pupils,
and the relevant literature written by the author of the monograph, Prof.
Zlatko Stahuljak. It further contains texts contributed by Prof. HumVs pupils
— Dr. Dragan Plamenac, Prof. Miroslav Slik, Prof. Ljerko Spiller, Prof. Ivan
Pinkava, and Prof. Stjepan Sulek.
Vaclav Huml the famous violin pedagogue was born in Beroun (Czecho-
slovakia) on the 18th September 1880. At the age of 10 years he had his first
debut as a violinist. In the year 1893, he joined the class of Prof. Otakar SevČik
at the Prague Academy of Music, and completed his studies with excellent re-
sults in 1899, which brought him the nickname “staccato-king”. In the course
of his studies he took part in many performances, especially as a member of
the string quartett of Prague s Academy of Music, performing with: J. Kube-
lik, J. Krejsa and A. Polivka. After completing his military service, he accept-
ed the invitation of conductor Ludvig Celansky, and in 1902, joined the Phil-
harmony of Lavov, as their first concert master. As soloist of the orchestra, and
first violinist of the Lavov Philharmony quartett, he took part in many per-
formances throughout Poland and Russia. He took part in the Zagreb Music
School contest for the post of a violin pedagogue, and was appointed as such
on the 11th September 1903. Until the year 1926, he took active part in con-
certs, particularly as a chamber musician. In the year 1919, he was one of the
founders of the Zagreb string quartett, including M. Graf, L. Miranov, and
U. Fabbri.
Vaclav Huml has educated a large number of first class violinists, and many
of them have gained international fame as: Zlatko Balokovič, (USA), Miroslav
Slik (Praha), Vlado Količ (USA), Brača Jovanovič (London), Ljerko Spiller
(Buenos Aires), and Zlatko Topolski (Vienna), further Aleksandar Szegedi,
Ivan Pinkava, and Josip Klima (Zagreb), Mary Zeielj and Petar Toskov (Bel-
grade), and Albert Dermelj (Ljubljana), and the following pedagogues: Lazar
Marjanovic (Belgrade), Marijana Schon, Ivan Weiland, Martin Bari6 and
Milan Tarbuk (all in Zagreb) and many more.
In 1937 Prof. Huml supervised and coordinated the activities of the newly
founded Zagreb Chamber Orchestra (conductors: Lovro Mataci6, Milan Sachs,
and Rudolf Matz — our well known violoncello pedagogue and Prof. HumVs
pupil). In this manner, he had a direct influence upon the post-war chamber
music traditions of the Zagreb violinistic school, which were especially cherish-
ed within the activities and successes of the Zagreb Soloists (conductor: Anto-
nio Janigro), and the Radio-Television Chamber Orchestra of Zagreb (con-
ductor: Stjepan Sulek, a violinist, HumVs pupil, composer and conductor).
Owing to his great pedagogical success in Zagreb, Prof. Huml was invited
to Ithaca (New York State, USA) to accept the post of the first professor for
violin, and in 1947 he received an invitation to come to Prague. However, he
remained in Zagreb. He was a member of the jury for the international com-
petitions — “H. Wienawski” in 1935 held in Warsaw, in the year 1937 in
Vienna, and in 1947 in Prague, under the auspices of the “Prague Spring”.
Prof. Vaclav Huml was decorated with the Order of Work of the First Class,
awarded him by the Presidency of the National Assembly of the Federal Na-
tional Republic of Yugoslavia. He was decorated on the 14th November 1950,
on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
Vaclav Huml died in Zagreb on the 6th January 1953, after having spent half
a century in the capital of Croatia, enriching its musical culture by an ack-
nowledged violinistic school, and educating a large number of violinists from
Yugoslavia and from foreign countries.
After Prof. HumVs death, the Croatian Music School founded the award “Vac-
lav Huml” which has until now been granted to ten young concert violinists.
