This book describes the cultural-political context of his life and work by chronicling the complicated relationship between Talich and Zdeněk Nejedlý (1В78Ч9Б2) and discussing the attitudes of leading figures in musical life, journalists, and politicians towards the Talich Affair1. From the beginning of the Czechoslovak Republic [in late 1918] to the end of the Second World War [May 1945), Talich stood at the head of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Nejedlý was an influential left-wing professor at Prague University, an historian, and musicologist, and, after 1945, the Communist Minister of Education and, briefly, Labour. The two men had not always been as distant from each other as one might judge from their confrontation after the Second World War. In the interwar years, Talich had not been a proponent of rightwing politics, though he was later reproached for having been so. In the first half of the 19Z0s, he belonged to the Social Democratic Party and counted dearly left-wing artists, like the writer-composer-dramatist-director Emil František Burian and the writer Vítězslav Nezval, among his close friends. Qn more than one occasion, Nejedlý himself praised Talich s art in reviews, though he also expressed 19Б reservations stemming from a different aesthetic understanding of music. The two men came into open confrontation in 1935, when Nejedlý and his supporters endorsed the conductor-composer Otakar Jeremiáš for head oř the Opera of the National Theatre and the ¡ob was awarded to Talich instead, Nejedlý and Talich were closest during the Second Republic [the several months from the signing of the Munich Agreement in late 1938 to the German occupation of mid-March 1939], when they both spoke out in defence of national Czech cultural values. From the summer of 1939 to 194D, Talich was pilloried in the Czech fascist press and had to face censorship and attacks in the National Theatre as well. The book considers in detail all the problematic things Taiich was reproached with after May 1945: his involvement in the leadership of two collaborationist organizations - the Czech Association for Collaboration with the Germans (Český svaz pro spolupráci s Nemci] and the Czech anti- -Bolshevist League [Česká liga proti bolševismu), his membership in the committee of the Czech National Council [Národní rada česká], his participation in a 194D visit to Germany by Czechs working in the arts and subsequent audience with Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels in the National Theatre in Prague, his 1942 speech pledging loyalty to the Reich [given in Prague s Municipal House shortly after the Allied attack on Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich], his personal and working relations with German collaborator and Czech Minister of Education and Public Enlightenment Emanuel Moravec, The author also corrects some claims by journalists and historians about the circumstances of Talich s arrest on the 23rd May in 1945 and his release from prison about a month later. He asks as well whether Nejedlý s personal role in the post-war prosecution of Talich was truly dear, as has been presumed by Talich s biographers. The author focuses on the debate that accompanied the Talich Case and refutes the view that proponents of a certain political view or artistic trend came out together against Talich. In 1945, after the Liberation, Talich was accused of collaboration with the Nazis. Though the investigation showed that his behaviour had not been impeccable, it did not conclude that Talich should be punished. Even so, his public work as a conductor was restricted after the war Many members of the Czech resistance defended Talich and demanded that he be allowed to work in music, including a number of communist artists 197 and politicians such as [i.e. playwright and director Emil František Burian, poet Vítězslav Nezval, opera singer Přemysl Kočí, and [in his own way]politician Antonín Zápotocký). Another erroneous view, formulated by the musicologist Mirko Očadlík [1904-1964], was that it all had to do with a dispute between Talich and the Nejedlý School , which was carrying on the musical legacy of Bedřich Smetana. A number of musicians also support Talich, particularly those from the Czech Chamber Orchestra (Český komorní orchestr] that he founded in 1946. The author puts the Talich case into the broader context of the post-war settling of scores with the real or imagined henchmen and sympathizers of the German forces of occupation. He considers the character of the people forming the moral judgements by examining their attitudes towards Communism, particularly the aspects of dictatorship of the proletariat and class struggle. This analysis focuses especially on Nejedlý, who repeatedly criticized Talich publicly after the war without trying to understand the motives behind his behaviour in the Protectorate, and showed very little courage when in the face of Stalinist repression. On the whole, however, it is fair to say that the politicians involved (including President Edvard Beneš) showed considerable restraint in the Talich case and made it possible to investigate his war-time behaviour thoroughly according to the law. The author rejects as simplistic the conclusions that dearly place the blame on Talich or other artists working in the Protectorate or, on the contrary, present these people as blameless victims of attacks by their enemies. Every life story is individual, the author argues, and each episode must be judged in its historical context. The author concludes that respect for Talich s art and talent will not diminish if we concede that during the Second World War he had to make compromises resulting from Nazi pressure, his own doubts, or simply fatigue and familiarity with the reality of Protectorate life.
