| adam_text | BIBLIOGRAPHY CONCERNING MORAVIAN ROYAL TOWNS
IN THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD (1990—2010)

Summary
The presented bibliography is a subject bibliography (however, not selective, but as ex-
haustive as possible), which is at the same delimited by the time interval of the two dec-
ades between 1990 and 2010. The subject and time delimitations stem from the impulse
given to our historiography by the Cities within the Middle Ages and the Early Modern
Era as a research topic of the last two decades conference held in Prague between the 11th
and 12th October 2011 by the Prague City Archives, the Historical Institute of the Academy
of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy of
Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, and the Institute of International
Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in Prague.
In connection with the task of dealing with important scientific contributions re-
lated to Moravian royal towns in the Middle Ages and the early modern period at the
above mentioned conference, we considered it very necessary to compile an exhaustive
(if possible), bibliographic overview of historiographical production up to the end of the
period of the early modern era (up to the end of the 18th century, or rather the end of the
reign of Maria Theresa), as such overviews attest best to the quantity and diversity of
research topics.
As for the Middle Ages, we concentrated the entire historiographical production for
all the 16 period Moravian royal towns (Brno, Bzenec, Hodonín, Ivančice, Jemnice, Jevíčko,
Jihlava, Litovel, Olomouc, Podivín, Pohořelice, Přerov, Uherské Hradiště, Uherský Brod,
Uničov, and Znojmo), for the early modern period only for the remaining 6 royal towns
(Brno, Jihlava, Olomouc, Uherské Hradiště, Uničov, and Znojmo).
As it becomes apparent from merely the number of the pages of the presented bib-
liography, more narrowly delimited by subject, an impressive number of titles are pub-
lished from the most varied points of view regarding the development of Moravian royal
towns, so their classified presentation to the interested scientific public undoubtedly
has its objective justification. Our bibliographic list deliberately does not concentrate on
commenting on the scientific value of the research topics. On the other hand, we con-
sidered it objectively beneficial to indicate in the introduction to the presented subject
bibliography how radically the changed social political conditions after the Velvet Revo-
lution had influenced the general direction of our urban historiography, by intensifying
the existing forms of scientific work organization (conferences, symposiums, work en-

counters) as well as by taking advantage of the possibilities not used until then (differ-
ent projects and grants). The activities of scientific institutions were organized either
annually or at least with cyclical regularity (regardless of the fact whether they were
biannual or multiannual), or as occasional activities. In both types of activities, the de-
cisive factor from the bibliography subject point of view was whether the organizers of
various events had devoted preferential interest specifically to towns and cities (while
the more precise time delimitation to the Middle Ages and/or early modern period did
not play a more significant role, as the research of various town phenomena had been
conceived mainly continually), or whether town issues had appeared in connection with
the solutions of other topics as a secondary problem and/or whether they had been more
strongly represented only at selected encounters. In the introductory section we also
captured chronologically the overview of particular symposiums and workshops where
papers appeared concerning Moravian royal towns and cities, highlighting (in brackets
in bold after the name of the encounter) the royal town which had become the subject
of special research attention. We believe that such overview attests best to the extensive
scientific-organizational activities and interest given ad hoc to Moravian royal towns.
Similarly, we presented a chronological list of the Festschrifts commemorating the an-
niversaries of eminent scientists, in which articles concerning Moravian royal towns ap-
peared in the two decades between 1990 and 2010. We highlight the royal town to which
the congratulators devoted their research interest in bold after their name.
In addition to the papers delivered at conferences regarding town issues in Slovakia,
the domestic biographical production was taken into consideration on principle, i. e. mon-
ographs, encyclopaedias, listings, etc., as well as individual scientific studies and articles,
reviews and annotations of monographs and of overview works, we also included bach-
elors theses (or final year, seminar papers), master s and doctoral theses, and dissertations
(including works available online), and catalogues of exhibitions no conference was asso-
ciated with that would produce separate proceedings. Only didactic literature therefore
remained aside (university textbooks and books of textbook character).
The time interval between 1990 and 2010 has been almost strictly adhered to. Excep-
tionally we include works exceeding the time limit into 2011 (2012) in the bibliographic list:
the most recently published proceedings of Forum urbes medii aevi, Mikulov symposium,
Studies in Post-medieval Archaeology, Stříbrná Jihlava conference, and important papers
appearing at occasional conferences, held in 2010 inclusive. As for the upper time limit,
is has been exceeded due to obvious reasons in reviews and news regarding the subject
monographs published in the given time interval.
