adam_text THE ETHNIC AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ROMA IN MACEDONIA (Summary) About the origin of the Romani people was written a lot in past, Romani people are the one of the most dispersive ethical community so that’s why it is very interesting to explore the history of this people. So far the science found that the homeland of this ethical community is the north part of the India’s subcontinent. We can prove this with the linguistic researches who found many similar words and phrases comparing the Romani language and the ancient Indian language, as well with the secondary and the new Indian language that was used in the past and it is still using by the people how live in India and Pakistan. The researches that were done on the migration process of the Roma, say that the migration started somewhere in the beginning of the first millennium, after that the migration process continues in different period of time and different areas and direction. The beginning of the migration the Roma people used to migrate to the west, especially to Pakistan and Persia. After that, during the period of IX to the XII century or known as period when the Muslim solders concurred Central Asia and all the way till North India. The migration process of the Roma ancestors was directed mostly to the West Asia, Armenia and at that time Byzantine Empire. According the history the biggest migration of the Roma happen during XIII century, it was the time of the big solder and ruler of that time called Muhammad Ghori, as well during the time of the Mongol solder called Genghis Khan who was trying to concur at that time West India or todays Pakistan. At this period of time the Roma people also migrated from their homeland in other regions mostly to the West going though Afghanistan and Iran (Persia) and trough the territory that was occupied by the Seljuq Turks and that’s how they came all the way to the Balkans. In the history the first name that was given to this people in Byzantine Empire was ethic word “Atsigani”. This first name is considerate as the bases of the names that was given to the Roma in different places for example in Turkey they use the word “Çingene”, than in Italy is used the word ”Zingari”, than the word “Gitans” or “Tsiganes” is used in France, than in Germany is use the word “Zigeuner” and in the South Slavic language is used the term “Cigani”. According to some theories the Roma were in Byzantine Empire even in 835 year, but the evidences say that they came in Byzantine Empire during the XI century. One legend says that at that time one group of Roma so called “Atsigani” from Armenia came because they were called with magic just to kill a Giant. Anyhow the term “Atsigani” dates from the XI century and it is used to name the Roma, but first is used to describe a sect that was known as a sect that is using prediction, witchcraft etc. About the origin of the term “Atsiganos” (“Atsigani”) there was a big discussion in the history, but according to the most of the theories the origin of the term comes from the sect “Atsigani” because 230 they had a reputation as people that use prediction to predict the future, witchcraft, wizards and people that use magic and have many different magic skills. The Roma people for the first time where found in Macedonia in the middle of the XII century, at first they came in very small groups. After a while, during the Ottoman occupation the Roma migrated at most in Macedonia, that was the time between XIV and XV century. During the Ottoman occupation the Roma people ( Çingene, Kipti) migrated first in the peripheral areas of the cities and the towns in Macedonia, in small communities so called “dzemaati” (Turkish: cemaati) or çingene cemaati and kiptiyan cemaat. There is belief that part of the Roma in Byzantia and in some countries on the Balkans, like Bulgaria and Serbia accepted the Christian orthodox religion. The rest of the Roma were under big influence of the Ottoman Empire and they accepted the Islamic religion. The ethnic and cultural characteristic of the Roma people is something that make them different from the others, dispute the fact that they have migrated so much the Roma still manage to keep the language, the crafts, the traditional music and dance and the customs, all the way from the homeland India and even nowadays they still keep their culture and tradition. As I said before, the Roma language is very close to the language that is spoken today in India and Pakistan, because the Roma belongs to the Indo- Aryan group of languages that is part of the Indo-European group of languages, but the fact is that not all the Roma speak the same. They are many dialects that are used by the Roma people. According to the researches that were done on the dialects that are used by the Roma in Macedonia are found three group of dialects: “erliski” or “arliski” (Turkish: yerli - from here), “kovachki” ( and “djambaski” ( dzambaski). In the “erliski dialect” there are many words and elements used from the Turkish language. In the “kovachki dialect” there are many elements of the Greek language and in the “djambaskiot dialect” more elements are found from the Romanian language. This is an evidence of the migration process and the connections that the Roma people had with other languages and cultures. According to the demographic characteristics of the Roma people, they have increased fertility and the number of the Roma population is getting bigger and bigger. The natural growth of the Roma population is around 30%o and it is three times bigger than the fertility of any other entity in Macedonia. The increased number of the Roma people in Macedonia that is showing on every inventory is a result of the fact that in the past the Roma people used to declare them salves as other nationality. Nowadays in Macedonia according to the official statistics live around 53.000 Roma and that means that the Roma are taking forth place of the scale of ethnic communities in Macedonia judged by the number of the members. All of the Roma are known generally by one name “the Roma” but there are still some different groups like the: Erlii(Arlii), Kovachi, Djambazi, , Topanlii etc. The different names of the groups that I just mentioned are coming from what 231 they used to do for living. Generally, if i make a brief look on the fact how many people speak the Roma language it will be more then obvious that in Republic of Macedonia the number of the Roma population is bigger than the official statistic is showing at the moment. Not only in Macedonia we have the problem with the ethnic mimicry of the Roma, but everywhere is known that the Roma people is marginal group and they used to declare them as Turkish, Albanian, Macedonian, Serbian even when they are still using the Roma language to communicate. That’s why it is hard to get real information of the population of the Roma people, especially when they will stop using their Roma language as mother language. The Roma people now live in Macedonia in every city and town as well in some villages. The most of them live in Skopje in the municipality Shuto Orizari (Šuto Orizari), here their language is official and the majority of the residents are Roma. Moreover, Shuto Orizari the Major is Roma and that’s why many of the residents of this municipality declare them as Roma. But a lot of the Roma live in other cities like: Prilep, Kumanovo, Tetovo, Gostivar, Kochani, Bitola, Shtip etc. The Roma settlements are very easy to recognize because they usually live in small houses mostly dilapidated. Nowadays, we are trying to change this stereotype as way of living well known for the Roma. Today, they are many changes on the labor market because now it is rare to find some of the Roma to work as scales, dzhambazi, knitters, but it is easy to find Roma that have their own business or to work housekeeping and other professions. Unfortunately, the habit of bagging is something that the Roma still have, the Government is tiying to change this with providing a place to live for the homeless, giving social care and other ways, but we still have Roma bagging in front of the places of worship, on the traffic lights and many other places. Roma still manage to keep the traditional costumes, mostly they wear it on the special occasions like weddings, for examples the girls wear special trousers so called “shalvari” or “chintiyani”, special vest and scarf. The everyday clothing of the Roma is not much different than the others, except they are some typical styles known as Roma styles of clothing that is different by the design, jewelry and decorating. The social culture of the Roma in Macedonia is changed because usually the Roma families were big with a lot of kids, but that was common before one half of the century. Nowadays, it is very hard to find Roma families with a lot of kids. Today are dominating smaller families, but the culture that you need your family in good of bad we still have as well the family should be always gathered to celebrate something. I spend three decades researching the Roma’s folklore and I found that the Roma have a lot of wisdom and the lyric poetry has special beauty and soul. All this is thanks to very few of the Roma’s interpreters. I will mention some of the popular singers and musicians that were and still are very popular and known. For example, the love songs singed by “the queen of the Roma’s music”, she is word famous Roma singer, her name is Esma Redžepova. Roma in Macedonia can be proud of many other singers that sing not only on Roma 232 language, but they singed their songs on other languages (for example the languages of our country neighbors) and that’s how they became world famous, 1 will mention some of them: Usnija Redžepova, Muharem Sebrezovski, Aki Rahimovski (pop singer). Moreover, the Roma musicians that play only instrumental music have done a lot to promote the Roma music. They also didn’t play just Roma music, but they used to play the music of our county neighbors. That’s why for the Macedonian, Turkish and Albanian people it is common to invite Roma musician on the wedding and on other celebration of family gathering to play. One of the world famous Roma’s musician who is playing Roma music is Ferns Mustafov. Now I will compare the elements of the social and economic differences between the Roma and the others in Macedonia is this religion. Most of the Roma people, or around 90 % (according to not official statistics is part of Sunni Islam. The other 10% is Christian orthodox and a very little percent of the Roma is in the little religious groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses, Evangelicals, Adventists etc. The Muslim Roma ( KhorRoma), have customs and other cultural habits like the other Muslims ethic communities in this region (Turks, Albanians, Bosniaks etc.), the Roma that are Christians orthodox (Gadžikane Roma) they have the customs like the Macedonians, the Serbs etc. The Muslim Roma is going to pray in mosques, they do circumcision ( sunet)for the boys as well they don’t eat pork and they celebrate Ramazan Bay ram (Eid al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha). On the other site the Roma that have accepted the Christian orthodox religion are going in church, have baptism and celebrate Christmas, Easter and other Christian holidays. Dispute the fact that in Macedonia two confessional groups of Roma, one that accepted the Muslim the other that accepted Christian religion I still belief that in some time soon there will be no religious differences between the Roma. Because, lately all of them are starting to celebrate Gjurgjovden ( Erdelezi) or St. George day which is known as holyday that they will slaughter lamb in order to give sacrifice and then will cook a lunch. On this day the Roma have no problem going in Church, orthodox or catholic but on other holydays like on St. Ilija/Aludžini (St. Elijah’s day) or Letnica/Golema Bogorodica (Assumption of Mary) the priests are tiying to stop them from going in church, in the history were done many researches on this. Nowadays, some of the Roma that have accepted the Muslim as a religion are under influence of some priests and they stop celebrating the holydays that are the same with the Christian calendar and believes. As a result of this influence today not many Roma slaughter lamb and have a lunch with the family on Erdelezi-Gjurgjevden, because they should to that for Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha) and not many Roma slaughter geese on Vasilica (St. Basil day), as they used to do it before. On the other hand, some of old believes and some of the customs are forgotten. For example, one of the most characteristic holydays of the Roma is the holyday so called Bibijako Džive (“Aunt’s holyday”) or that is a holyday 233 when they do circumcision of the young boys. Another forgotten holyday is the visiting homes with the young girls so called “lazarki” those are young girls that are wearing traditional Roma costumes and they are visiting homes with one older women who is playing on tambourine, unfortunately today this holydays are almost forgotten and it is very hard to find place where Rome still celebrate them. In the end I will point out to some differences during the life events of every human being, like the process of starting and having a family, weddings, baptism, the circumcision of the young boys and the customs during funeral. There are not many differences in the process of starting and having a family, of course that they are differences look on religious aspect during wedding ceremonies. Big difference is found during the baptism in Christian family and the circumcision in the Muslim family. Customs during the funerals are different because it is a religious act of say goodbye to the loving and a lost person, but dispute the fact that they are many differences during the funerals, Roma still use to come and show respect to the lost person and his or hers family no matter if it’s Muslim or Christian. 234 5 10 10 16 21 21 26 29 38 43 47 48 50 50 57 57 57 62 63 66 66 67 68 68 68 69 70 70 71 71 72 73 75 76 81 81 81 83 84 85 85 86 87 87 88 89 90 91 91 СОДРЖИНА ВОВЕД.....................................................
